Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanisha Barnett.
Hi Tanisha, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up on the Southeast side of Austin, TX. My mother was a teenage, single mother with two girls. She never allowed us to settle in life, regardless of what it looked like. Although we grew up in Dove Springs, my mother never allowed us to identify ourselves as our environment. She used to talk to my sister and I about going to college, becoming something to better ourselves in order to have better lives and to give back to our community. The lessons she taught us would be an important piece that built the foundation to what my future would be. I remember feeling and knowing I would be someone great and impactful in my community and in life. My mother would take us to volunteer at the local food banks to give back. She also put me in my first community organization at the age of ten years old, The Youth Advisory Committee. We were youth ambassadors who worked with Congressman Lloyd Doggett and his team to discuss the issues and create solutions that impacted the youth in our neighborhood, Dove Springs. This was the first time I felt like I had a voice and it mattered in my community. It ignited my passion for community outreach and to advocate for the youth.
I went on and participated in several amazing organizations in middle school, such as Delta Gems (formally known as Delteens) with Delta Sigma Theta Inc., Jack and Jill Inc. and the Aspire Higher Mentorship Club to name a few. As I gained more confidence in high school, my activism grew. I went on to compete in beauty pageants, that allowed me to be an ambassador for my community. I won several titles such as Miss Juneteenth Austin 2007, Miss Central Star and Miss Central Texas to name a few. I also volunteered and helped out at the Austin Convention Center when Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana. This was my way of giving back to my community for pouring into me. After graduation, I went to college to pursue different career fields until I got a job in the Pharmaceutical field. I was able to get the satisfaction of helping others on their journey, being impactful and doing something I loved at the same time. I met my husband and we had our daughters. In this space is when the idea of Nature’s Hidden Treasures was born. I wanted to create a business that would make an impact and provide a product or service that would help others on their skin and hair care journey and reconnect them with nature.
I began formulating and developing the famous Liquid Gold Hair Growth Serum. I used the product on everyone’s hair that I styled. People began to request to purchase the oil and that created a private Clientele list that I would service. My business has been growing since. Nature’s Hidden Treasures has sold products all across the US. Within the last five years, NHT has expanded, rebranded and developed new products set to launch this Fall 2021. I have been blessed with many opportunities that have opened so many doors for me to pour back into the community. As an Entrepreneur, I AM able to provide products that help those on their skin and hair care journeys, as a Pageant Director for the Central Texas Area, I AM able to create pageantry programs that mentor and help young ladies build their self-esteem and confidence through pageantry. I wouldn’t have been able to reach my pinnacle of success without my humble beginnings, hard work, dedication and my community.
It’s what makes me Tanisha Barnett and what motivates me today!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, this journey hasn’t been smooth! As an Entrepreneur, Community Outreach Advocate, Mother and Wife, I have been under divine pressure. Some of those challenges were building a solid team, funding, the COVID-19 Pandemic, marriage, motherhood and womanhood. I was able to overcome these challenges by 1) Communicating, 2) Being transparent 3) Knowing when to say and ask for help, most importantly 4) Being Tenacious!

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Find a mentor that is going in the direction you would like to go in. Find one who isn’t afraid to be honest with you and willing to go through the trenches with you. No, they cannot do the work for you. You have to do your own research, execute and apply what you’re learning along the way. When it comes to networking, SHOW UP! That is step one. Second, Be Prepared! Know your elevator pitch and bring your business cards! I learned that the hard way and missed out on opportunities.
