Meet Lindsay Macmanus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsay Macmanus.

Hi Lindsay, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I am one of the few native Austinites. I went to Bowie High School and then on to Texas A&M University. After college decided I wanted to be a nurse and went back to school to get my nursing degree. I have four beautiful kids and wanting to spend more time with them than at work decided to turn my love of photography into a full-time job. It’s the best decision I could have made. I have been a full-time photographer for ten years now and have been back in the Austin area since the summer of 2015. I moved to Buda in May 2017 and have worked hard to grow my photography business. Also, in the fall of 2020, I started the Buda Red Truck Company. I bought a 1954 Ford F100 old red truck and not only use it for my own photoshoots but also rent it out for events, for other photographers, etc. It brings a lot of fun and joy to those who have used it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When first starting out, I moved around a lot and I think most people know that it’s hard enough to start a new business, let alone starting it over every time I moved. This is my forever home and I feel like coming back to my roots was the perfect thing for me, my kids, and my business. I was starting to really get in a good groove then of course Covid happened and I wasn’t sure what would happen to my photography business. It’s my full-time job and what provides for me and my kids. I was lucky enough to only be off of work for about a month and a half. It’s been a process getting back to full-time work but I wasn’t going to let it get in my way to capturing the best memories of other people’s lives.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Going from a newborn nurse to a newborn photographer was just a perfect match. I specialize in posed newborn portrait photography but love lifestyle photos as well. I even go into the hospitals(when allowed to) and capture the freshest hours of their lives. Many clients I meet as a pregnant mom and then I get to meet their baby when born and watch their family grow. Honestly, I couldn’t see myself doing anything else at this point, it’s my passion to capture these memories for all these families. I don’t think anyone looks back at an old photo and says I regret taking those. But many people regret not having those memories to look back on. I cherish all the beautiful photos I have of my kids and I know I need more of me with them as well.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Doing something new is very scary, and honestly, it should be a little uncomfortable. Everyone makes mistakes in life, just know that all those little things that might have set you back also gave you an opportunity to learn and grow from it. Being as prepared as you can be always helps. I look back at when I first started my photography journey and I know there are things I would do differently. I would have taken more time to really learn from the best in the industry and put more into in person workshops than trying to learn it all on my own. Finding a mentor is HUGE!! And there are so many people out there that really want you to succeed!! So find those people and hold them close, it can only help you be better.
