Today we’d like to introduce you to Homer Hill.
Hi Homer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Austin, Texas. When I was born in Austin, it was a very segregated city, and most of the African Americans lived in East Austin. My formative years was immersed in one cultural experience Afro-centric in nature. That experience has impacted my life and how I have navigated to get to where I am today. Up to the age of 12, I had not interacted with White people due to segregation, so when I was bused to school due to integration my whole world as I knew it changed. I went from the perfect human being to “why is your hair nappy”, “why do you starch your jeans”, “why do talk like that”, “You ni_ger”, and other degrading responses. It was a shock to my system, and thoughts started take control of me and whether I could succeed under such conditions. I was accustomed to having family and community support available at all times, and now I was on an island of hate and disdain with no idea where to go for support. The whole integration experience helped to form my life experiences especially in business. My father owned his own business a barbershop that served the African American community in East Austin for 40 years. From him, I would receive lessons of humbleness and lessons of aggressiveness that has guided through life. He was my role model and my mentor. Business to him was based on consistency and respect. Because of my negative integration experiences, I started all of my business efforts in East Austin where I felt most respected and welcomed.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
To be honest, the biggest struggles consistently have been financial and discrimination.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
What I have come to realize why I eventually chose business as my occupation. I really enjoy making business concepts to become real functioning business entities. So, I have prepared myself throughout the years to do just that. I believe what set me apart from my counterparts is the ability to put big situations into small spaces and foresight by seeing the whole picture of situations from start to finish.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I studied my father’s approach to life and business.
