Daily Inspiration: Meet Guy Forsyth

Today we’d like to introduce you to Guy Forsyth.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was mainly a latchkey kid who discovered a love for music that I pursued on my own. Self-taught, I found that the best seat at a show was the one in front of the microphone. I fell in love with American roots music, music that evolved for personal and medicinal reasons instead of business. I became a musician because I am a fan; people are at their best when they are sharing the things that they love.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My advice to young artists would be to get a business degree, and my advice to young businesspeople is to study the arts. It has not been smooth; I feel like anyone that could get away with doing my job would. Be willing to reinvent yourself continuously as you watch the goalposts move.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a songwriter, performer, bandleader, record label bigwig and producer. I specialize in roots music and live music performance and am most known for my work in Austin, Texas and around the world as a musician/original roots musician. I am most proud of the fact that if I do my job right, it makes people happy. I hope that although I draw inspiration from the history of music, I am interpreting it in my own way. I think that people should make art like their life is at stake.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Like Jospeh Campbell says, “Follow your bliss,” your interest and excitement is one of the most valuable things you bring to the table. What has worked well for me is putting myself out there, even when not invited. If your approach is to calmly wait your turn, you will be left behind the people that are too excited to wait.
