Rising Stars: Meet Laura Yap

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Yap

Hi Laura, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I learned about the floral industry while looking for a creative outlet from my full time position. After having my first child and having quit my job, I started designing for friends and my business grew from there. I studied fine arts in undergrad and business as a masters, so the combination has helped me to operate professionally and creatively as an entrepreneur.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Defining my brand, learning pricing and industry standards, learning to express myself as an artist but to design work that many like and will buy- al have been challenging. It has been slow growth but I’m proud of how this business has grown. I have always had my two daughters at home with me full time so balancing running a growing business and young children is something to intentionally control.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am known for combining dried/preserved florals with fresh luxe blooms for a texture heavy, motion filled style. I enjoy using more obscure flowers and using them for the ultimate experience for clients. I am proud that my style may not be for everyone, that it may be more new and esoteric than what a florist is usually seen as.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Outgoing, athletic, always interested in anything creative. I competed as a downhill skier from a young age through college. I also enjoyed singing!
