Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Martinez-Vasquez.
Hi Amber, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey as a content creator began in 2017 when I launched my blog, themimosamom.com and Instagram, @themimosamom. I had just given birth to my son, and was looking for a creative outlet to express my feelings, struggles, and triumphs as a first-time mom, as well as make connections with other moms. Over time, my platforms evolved into what they are today – a colorful space + community of positivity where I share “all-things” Austin and more. Through the years, I have been able to make amazing local Austin connections, work with major brands & companies, which has allowed me to turn The Mimosa Mom into a profitable side business. These platforms are dedicated to encourage my audience to celebrate themselves through personal growth, wellness, a positive outlook, and of course, a good cocktail!
In this particular season of life, I am focusing on creating and developing more intentional content and partnerships, as my full-time career in higher education is on the uphill and taking precedence. I look forward to my future in the content creation industry, where I will continue to work towards bringing LatinX + Hispanic representation to Austin’s creator community, partner with brands & businesses that resonate with my mission, and begin to incorporate more career-related content and professional tips and tricks that applies to everyone – no matter what industry you are in!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As fun as this journey has been, it has not always been easy. Particularly in my early years, I really struggled with establishing my niche and developing my brand. I often reverted back to successful bloggers/creators and tried to mirror their content in my own way, thinking that would be the answer. THIS WAS MY BIGGEST MISTAKE EVER! I even tried to stick with a neutral-colored feed, since this was the most popular aesthetic at the time. If you see my bright, colorful feed now, you know that neutrals was just not me!
When I began to be ME, and solely focus on being authentic and the value I could provide as a creator, everything else began falling in place. I truly believe your audience can feel if you’re being intentional and authentic with your content, and once I made this transition, not only did my community and brand partnerships grow, but my love for content creation grew as well.
Another struggle has been not “giving in” to the hustle culture of content creation and remaining true to my overall professional and life goals. I want to be a voice in changing the narrative that you have to be a “social media superstar” or be self-employed in order to be thriving – because you don’t! We are all called on to do different things, and no matter what industry we are in, we ALL can be inspiring in our roles. Whether it be a stay-at-home parent, the corporate world, or owning your own business, we all have something unique and inspiring to bring to the table.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My social platforms are most widely known as a local resource for things to do, see, eat, and drink in Austin, as well as established and up-and-coming local brands and businesses. In addition to sharing on my platforms, I am also a contributor and family field expert for Do512 Family, where I provide recommendations and resources for things to do with kids in the Austin metro area and surrounding suburbs.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
For personal growth and self-development, I recommend “The Most Powerful Woman in the Room is You” by Lydia Fenet, “Untamed” by Glennon Doyle, and “How to Win Friends and Influence People” by Dale Carnegie.
