Daily Inspiration: Meet Jessica Rockowitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Rockowitz.

Jessica, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Photography was entirely accidental for me. I have a background in nursing and science, but I stopped practicing in 2015 to pursue marketing. I was working as a freelancer for various brands in the mom + baby space, and I purchased a starter camera to take better photos of the product I was being sent for client collaborations. I immediately fell in love, taught myself manual mode, and started practicing on my kids. Before I knew it, I was being asked to take photos for others, and then it became a legitimate business for me! Here we are three years later, and I now do photography full-time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The struggles along the way have really been centered around becoming a business owner. I had no idea the amount of work that was involved in every piece of it. I also had no idea how exhausting photography truly was in many ways. I am SO passionate about it, but it is a LOT of time, hustle, and effort.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a lifestyle photographer specializing in families, intimate weddings, and branding. I think I am most sought after for my family work specifically because I strive for a unique storyteller element to my images that is coupled with very intimate experience. I have a client closet with over 100 dresses for women, as well as extensive clothing and accessory options for kids. I want families to come to me who are seeking something dynamic and out of the box – not just another set of family photos, but a true experience that will leave them feeling taken care of along the way. I’m most proud of how much I’ve grown in the small period of time that I’ve been in business. I really love my clients so much. They are the BEST humans.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
Even though social media can be a time suck sometimes, it also connects me with the best people. Instagram has allowed me to really build relationships in the community and learn from other photographers, too. I also love the podcast “How I Built This” for some overall inspiration, as well as, “This Can’t Be That Hard,” which is specifically geared to photographers.
