Today we’d like to introduce you to Brandon Alan.
Hi Brandon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started playing when I was 10 or 11 – it was 4th grade. My dad was a guitar player. There were guitars sitting around the house and my mom played piano and flute. I became interested in these instruments as a pre-adolescent, learning and playing all different genres such as classic rock, country and even learned some jazz as part of the learning process. I started writing music around 16 and getting the hand of songwriting and then I finally made my first record in Austin, TX, when I was 19 or 20 and that was called “Life Eclipse.”
It was a learning album for me cause everyone on the record was a veteran and we recorded in a cool studio in Austin called Wire. I learned a lot about the recording world and the musicians taught me so much during that recording experience. When you’re in the studio, it’s about the best part allowing that to win – whether that’s a vocal or an instrument change. I learned so much from that takeaway and leaning on musicians for the learning process and creativity process.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Obviously, when you’re first getting into it – you have to play live shows to make money until you hit a certain phase of the career. Gotta earn your stripes and build your profile in order to make that dream into an actual living. I was always playing multiple nights a week. The money got better as you got older and as you built your fanbase – it was not initially a smooth ride to get there. The worse things I had to deal with were robberies of music equipment where I had gear and guitars stolen three different times and that is enough to make you walk away from your dreams.
I could not do anything else. Music is my calling. I eventually moved to Nashville and then worked there for a few years and then came back to Texas in 2017. The last 3 or 4 years of my career have been my smoothest in terms where I can relax. I have a kid and I’m married now and a lifestyle where I can enjoy more what I do now. I love playing in Texas. I don’t care about playing all 50 states or playing national tours and that’s not to say I don’t care about bands in those areas. What matters to me is not leaving my family and I am content with playing here in Texas as there is a lot of places to play around here.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a musician. I’m a guitar singer/songwriter. I am known with my fans for creating what you call “Modern Texas Country” music with some other colors in it. Country bluesy rock – it’s not necessarily straight-laced country. I’m known for writing happy songs – I write positively when I can and that’s one thing people can take away from the albums they hear.
How do you think about luck?
I look at the whole thing as a grind and if you prepare yourself for the opportunity, it strikes!
