Inspiring Conversations with Alan Gonzalez of Aguacate Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Gonzalez.

Hi Alan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I come from a family of Mexican architects. That means that since I was young, I was constantly in contact with the profession because of my dad and later, both of my older brothers Erik & Jair.

I started studying at the University of Texas where I had the opportunity to study abroad three times: London, Norway & finally Japan which became one of my main inspirations until this day.

I merged what I learnt in Japan with my Mexican upbringing, keeping nature as the main variable in the design process and combining the minimalism, sensible use of materials and the carefully crafted use of shadows and natural lightning that I discovered while abroad & the warmth, coziness and color use I experienced in Mexico.

After those trips and finishing my degree, I interned in New York City and later became a part of SAGO INTERNATIONAL, where my family practiced architecture with various projects ranging in scale. Later on, I decided to start my solo practice. Hence, Aguacate Studios was born.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I consider that Architecture is complicated as a profession because there’s a lot of trial and error that needs to be done before finding your own design style.

Each project has its own learning curving, sometimes steep, sometimes gentle but never smooth. There’s no book that defines every variable that comes into play on every project, this creates and infinite amount 0f possible outcomes that are to be resolved on a day to day basis.

With that being said, I like architecture because the path you go through is never walked alone. For every project, there’s a team that helps you get through it and when done right, everyone grows and follows the same direction making future projects more simple to navigate through.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Aguacate studios emerged out of the need to create tailored spaces that suit each one of their users steering clear of the pragmatism of today’s architecture. Our design is merely a reflection of the outcome of an in depth study of inherited conditions and needs.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are currently developing modular community-driven, eco friendly and sustainable housing that can be acquired online soon. Our platform aims to create a customizable, hassle free experience, similar to purchasing a car. If this sounds like something that interests you, please contact us.
