Community Highlights: Meet Matt Johnson of Mill Scale Metalworks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matt Johnson. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Mill Scale Metalworks was founded by Matt and Caleb Johnson in 2018 in Lockhart, Texas. Since barbecue is a part of the collective identity of Texas, they set out to build timeless and uniquely identifiable smokers and grills. With hand-built craftsmanship to stand the test of time, they can be passed down for generations. In a fast-paced world, they provide the opposite: food cooked slowly, with a piece of equipment that could take a lifetime to master. Matt and Caleb wanted to build something that can be appreciated by the chefs and pitmasters practicing traditional Central Texas cooking techniques or the weekend warrior starting a new journey cooking with fire. The prize is the process.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Like most folks, especially in current times, we have experienced highs and lows. It’s really a difficult time for everyone right now. We have been lucky to be able to adapt and pivot as the market, supply chain, and infrastructures have changed. We know that relationships are the most important thing that we build.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Mill Scale Metalworks?
We are metal fabricators in Lockhart, TX. We have a focus on cooking performance, structure, multiple-function and design. We are curious, ambitious and try to push the boundaries as often as possible. Our goal is to slow life down a bit with food. Cooking with fire is a part of the history of every human on earth. We aim to get back to that and enjoy the simple things. Food has a power to connect people who otherwise would not.

What were you like growing up?
We grew up in small-town outside of Waco. There wasn’t much art, culture or even culinary variety. Our mom is from the small Portuguese island of Madeira. She cooked every meal from scratch; mainly fish and vegetables. Our dad would fire up the grill while we made sure to stay close by. The home-cooked meal always brought the family together at the end of the day. We worked with our hands a lot growing up. Our dad was the type of guy who never paid anyone to fix anything. So naturally, we picked up a healthy work ethic and resourceful problem-solving skills. It was how we grew up that made us attracted to the food aspect of metalwork.
