Today we’d like to introduce you to Alejandra Narvaez.
Hi Alejandra, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I always knew that I wanted my own business. What my business would be and how I was going to get there were questions I had yet to answer. I grew up having several different interests while hearing “No” so many times that I’ve lost count. Growing up in a Hispanic family, respecting your elders and getting their approval is a pretty big deal. I grew up with the mentality that my elders were always right and that they knew what was best for me. Their plans for me were that I’d be the first generation in our family to make it to college and become a doctor, a lawyer, or a teacher.
Around that time, I also struggled with body image issues. I got teased both at school and at home for being thin. So thin that my mom took me to several doctors to make sure something wasn’t wrong. At 12 years old, what I heard about fitness or “being healthy” always seemed to revolve around losing weight. I was the complete opposite! I wanted to gain healthy weight, not lose it. I felt that I couldn’t relate to anyone.
It wasn’t until about 2015, sometime after I had my son that I came across a fitness professional that I could relate to. I binge-watched every video she had and took notes. That was the start of my fitness journey.
Bulking, cutting, caloric deficit, macros? The internet had a ton of information. Some sources were good, others weren’t. At the time, there was no way I could afford a gym membership or a personal trainer. I learned by trial and error…LITERALLY! Some weeks I was drinking too many protein shakes a day, others I did way too much cardio. I didn’t stop. There I was in my 10 by 11 apartment living room floor with no equipment except a yoga mat and a toddler running around me, under me, or (if I was lucky enough that day) he was taking a quick nap.
A year later, I had learned enough to make some progress. The struggle now was finding the time to do it all. Between school, working part-time, and mommy duties, exercising 6-10 hours per week to obtain results was at the bottom of the list. As far as career choice at that time, I was rushing through a degree that I wasn’t sure I liked so I could get a job and be able to support my son and I.
Once I was done with school, my part-time job turned into full-time. I tried every day to tell myself that I loved my job but the truth caught up to me. After three years in healthcare administration, I decided to find something else. I took on other administrative roles, started school again, then left school. All while struggling to continue to fit time for the gym. In 2018, I came across body sculpting and decided to add it to my routine.
I instantly fell in love with it. Why had I not found this service before? The hours I could have saved! My trial and error had come to an end in so many different ways. I became obsessed with the idea of passing this information along.
That’s when Austin Smart Sculpt was born.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Between finding my own voice, becoming a young mom, financial struggles, and everything else that comes with taking care of myself and a little human, it has definitely not been a smooth road. I have changed my perspective and learned that anything worthwhile in life will never come easy. I’ve learned that I shouldn’t throw away one day, one week, or one month of progress. If there is a spec of progress to just continue. Whether fitness-related, relationships, mommy duties, work, or my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My business is very unique. I have integrated body sculpting with health and wellness. Whether it’s a busy individual trying to find time in the day to reach their fitness goals or someone who is just beginning their health and wellness journey. Our purpose is to be that help along the way without having to turn to costly, painful, invasive procedures. We currently offer body sculpting services, I am also in the process of becoming a certified personal trainer. Austin Smart Sculpt LLC will soon offer a variety of body sculpting and personal training services that can match anyone’s needs.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
