Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiese Lopez.
Hi Tiese, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a Family Nurse Practitioner/Aesthetic nurse practitioner. I own and operate Spoil Me Pretty Aesthetics, Nursing Inc. and Nurse Like a Boss apparel. I am married and we have four boys.
I started my career in medicine when I graduated from high school. I was pre-med for three years at the University of La Verne in California. After being told by my advisor that I should consider changing my major, I did. I changed my major to business and finished my degree in business management and public administration. I then worked in banking for several years. After having my second son, I decided that I wanted a more rewarding job that provided more flexibility and better pay.
I then quit my job and cashed in my 401(k) and went to nursing school. After completing my ADN, I worked in several areas of nursing before returning back to school to get my BSN. After I thought I would never go back to school, I returned to school to get my MSN and become a family nurse practitioner. During that time, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit and had ideas about certain businesses but never fully committed. I first started my nurse like a boss apparel line to earn money to start my potential aesthetic business. At the time, it was really just an idea. When I started Nurse Like a Boss many people like the idea and the brand. But let’s be honest retail is very difficult because there’s so many different brands that are doing the same thing. I was at the point where I wasn’t making enough money from the line but still wanted to continue it and use it to further push me to start the Aesthetic business. During Covid in 2020, I was laid off and I was finishing my last year in graduate school. At that point didn’t need more things to do because I did have four kids at home plus I had a full load with school so I had plenty to keep myself busy. However, I still had this vision of my aesthetic business. So I decided to do a training that I thought was quick that I could use once my business started that would bring in money but didn’t require a lot of time. I initially started working on my family. And then it just kind of took off from there by word-of-mouth. I went from working in my house/garage to a small studio and now to a 1100 square-foot aesthetic practice of my own. We offer a variety of beauty services from Botox, lip fillers to post op lymphatic massage. It was not easy by any means it took a lot of time, certifications, money, research and commitment.
I didn’t have to be a nursepreneur, I chose to be one. I could’ve stopped 11 years ago while working in banking but, I wasn’t content where I was and wanted more. I had a full-time job, a husband, two kids and a home. But I knew that God had more in store for me. It’s called Spoil Me Pretty Aesthetics.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s always going to be challenges in life. In the past and current, I’ve been faced with the challenge of being a working mother and business owner. It’s always challenging trying to achieve work-life balance. Not only is it challenging being a woman in business but even more being a black woman! In the most recent years, I suffered the loss of my grandfather and my father in law. I’ve also had to tackle with health concerns. In most recent, like many, I’ve had to face some of the challenges that came with pandemic such as, losing my job, homeschooling, and being quarantined.
