Life & Work with Susana Haro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susana Haro.

Hi Susana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my adventure in the beauty industry back in high school. I was going to school in Culver City, CA where I grew up. We had a program that allowed us to learn a skill in case we didn’t want to go to a traditional college. I saw this as an opportunity to earn money so I could pay for college and have a backup.

I finished beauty school and got a Cosmetology License in 1994. The money I made doing hair allowed me to pay for college and earn three degrees including a BS in Interior design. I tried to pursue that path and quickly realized I really missed doing hair. So I started doing hair again and never looked back since.

In 2019 I opened up Salon 560 in Culver City, CA. The pandemic hit and we had to shut our doors for nearly six months in 2020. During all the shutdowns, my husband and I talked about moving back to Austin since we had spent two years here about fifteen years ago and really missed it. If we were going to make a big move, this seemed to be the right time. We have been back in Austin a full year and we are so happy we made that decision.

I found a great salon home here in Austin and I am so grateful for my co-workers and clients who I have met here and the ones I left behind because everyone has been so supportive. You can find me at Bex and Co Salon (Domain). I am working full time doing what I love in this amazing city.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I have faced so many different challenges on my path. At first not really seeing hairdressing as a career but as a job. My passion for the hair industry didn’t start until I realized how fulfilling and wonderful being a hairstylist really is. I love what I do because it’s a perfect combination of art and science so I get to use both sides of my brain and make people happy and confident while I do it.

The pandemic was also a very big challenge. I had a salon that was barely one year old and now it was so uncertain what was going to happen with it.

We survived the shutdowns and then I decided to move to a new city where I had no clientele and no one knew who I was. It was a hard decision but if there is one thing that the pandemic has taught me. It is that life is short and you just have to go for it!

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in color and cuts! I love to do hair transformations. My goal is to make people fall in love with their hair. I do a lot of curly haircuts because I myself fought my own wavy/curly hair for so many years. I finally realized that my curls were beautiful and that I should work with them and not try to hide them. I also do a lot of color from fashion tones to more natural and subtle hues. I love color and how it transforms whatever it touches.

What makes you happy?
Seeing my guests smile after we are finished with their service makes me so happy because it lets me know we accomplished what we set out to do during the consultation, beautiful hair.

What a wonderful article. This is an example of another woman who set a goal and reached it. She should be so proud that she never gave up in spite of all the obstacles. I’m sure she will reach the moon on her journey and even if she doesn’t she will surely be among the stars.
