Meet Jenn Robinson of Soul of a Home

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Robinson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved creating things with my hands. Whether sewing, writing, baking/cooking, gardening, or home DIY, I couldn’t imagine not creating. It’s always been a part of who I am ever since I was a child.

My husband and I are fans of having inviting home decor and I really enjoy candles as a part of that. Last year, like many, my position at work transitioned into work-from-home. I’d light a candle as soon as I woke up in the morning and logged on. I really liked the way the candles smelled, but they didn’t make me feel so great. Being a huge home fragrance person, this was a problem I wanted to solve. Additionally, I remember a time that a friend visited our home and we had a candle burning that we’d purchased from a big box store. She began to cough and experience eye irritation, but once we extinguished the candle, she felt better. Not willing to give up on candles completely, I began to do a ton of research on ingredients and began to make my own.

I chose the name Soul of a Home because we all have something that we want our homes to say to those that we invite to be within those walls. The soul is the essence of the home. I create everything with the goal of helping others to make their homes their favorite places to be. Everything I create, I’m proud to have in our home and share with others. Whether your home is a dorm room, studio apartment, a five bedroom & two bath on a corner lot, temporary or permanent, home is home, and we all feel more at home when we’re able to add our own personal touches!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has had its challenges, for sure, but also it hasn’t. I say that it hasn’t because I haven’t run into a lot of supply chain issues and I’ve had the support of my husband as well as wonderful friends and family that have continually encouraged me along the way. That is invaluable.

I’ll say that it has because I believe there will always be some level of difficulty in establishing a new business. Helping others to know about what you do and that your business exists takes work. I’ve had the opportunity to do several markets which has been helpful so I hope to continue to grow. However, I know that there will always be hiccups along the way in some form or fashion, and that’s okay!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Soul of a Home?
With Soul of a Home, you’ll find hand-poured soy wax candles and wax melts as well as air + linen mists. Additionally, I love making soap which I plan to add to my product line in the weeks to come! I have very strong convictions concerning paraffin and phthalates so you’ll never find either of those in anything that I create and I believe in using only high-quality ingredients.

I test everything thoroughly before it hits the shop, so it’s not uncommon for me to revise a formula several times before I’m satisfied with the outcome. I never want to offer anything that I’m not proud to put my name on.

When you purchase from Soul of a Home, I want you to have something beautiful and timeless that brings a sense of calm to your home and provides enjoyment. Many of my customers have shared with me that they love that they can enjoy fragrance in their homes again without the headaches and irritation that they’ve experienced in the past which makes me so happy to hear. I also believe in doing things with integrity and kindness and desire to have that touch every aspect of all that I do.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Be patient! Everyone has a different journey and that’s okay. I’ve also learned that record-keeping and organization are so crucial. Even if it is not your forte, it’s an invaluable asset. I love the creating part the most, but without proper admin work, the business will not thrive. Also, it’s okay to rebrand! I am currently rebranding to have a more neutral look and I’ve been really proud of how that’s been going. As time went on, I realized that I desired a cleaner look that better executed my vision for my company.
