Hidden Gems: Meet Yasmine Mavrakis of Mavrakis Nutriton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmine Mavrakis.

Hi Yasmine, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’m a Registered Dietitian who has been working in the field of nutrition for the past eight years. I started as a dietetic technician in 2014 while pursuing my Bachelor’s in Nutrition and Dietetics at the University of Missouri. After my full-time community and clinical internships and graduation, I became a Registered and Licensed Dietitian in the state of Texas.

I began my career in corporate wellness in Dallas before moving to Austin in 2018 to pursue a role in community mental health. It’s here that I fully developed my passion for outpatient nutrition counseling, especially in supporting folks in both physical and mental health.

In 2020, I joined a group private practice and this year (2021), I transitioned to founding my private practice, Mavrakis Nutrition, as my full-time endeavor. I specialize in supporting clients in gentle (yet intentional) nourishment, managing chronic disease, and healing their relationships with food.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The road has never been smooth but always filled with doors of opportunities. The opportunity to move to Austin for a new role was terrifying initially, yet exactly what I needed as a provider to grow my counseling skills in a supportive, intuitive eating-aligned community.

The pandemic in 2020 created isolation as a healthcare provider but also created a glimmer of hope as healthcare began transitioning quickly to telehealth appointments. This allowed me to begin serving individuals from across the state of Texas.

There were a few other recent obstacles along the way — such as the burnout that so many of us healthcare providers experienced in the pandemic, uncertainties for the future, and grieving while observing racial injustices take place in the communities we serve.

We’ve been impressed with Mavrakis Nutriton, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My nutrition practice specializes in supporting clients through chronic disease prevention and management, nutrition education for adolescents and adults, and empowering folks to make peaceful relationships with food through intuitive eating.

As a bicultural Latina/Arab-American dietitian, I provide nutritional counseling from a Health at Every Size framework and am able to provide insights to food and body image concerns across diverse cultures and identities.

I am also a Certified Fitness Instructor with the American Council of Exercise and am passionate about bridging the gap between physical and mental health through joyful movement.

What matters most to you?
The quality of life of those around me. Whether it be my clients, my friends, my family, or myself– I genuinely care for us all to experience the fullness of life as often as we can. I am blessed to be able to use nutrition as a form of counseling in my client’s lives to support them feeling at their best so they can experience all the aspirations and joy that is available to them in life.
