Today we’d like to introduce you to Tom Coplen.
Hi Tom, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have always been an amateur photographer interested in landscape and nature photography. I became a licensed realtor in 2001 and around 2007 or so, I became aware of the need for quality photography for the real estate professionals and the peripheral industries. At the time, there was either really high end, “Architectural Digest” type of photographers or really, really low-quality DIY types images being captured. I felt like I could deliver a higher quality product and services at an affordable price. My business took off, and I have been pursuing architectural and real estate photography since! I have since branched out and offered video products/services as well as aerial photography and video, which is really in demand at this time.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life is never smooth! There are always learning curves with any business, and photography is no exception of course. As with any business, there is always the struggle and tension between marketing and creating new business and keeping your existing clients happy and coming back. The dynamics of the marketplace have changed dramatically since I started the business in 2007. When I started, there were a handful of comparable competitors offering similar services, and there are now literally hundreds, so that competition has negatively impacted pricing and demand. In addition, photo and video technology have become more “mainstream.” Hence, many consumers feel that they can do it themselves due to an abundance of available technology and resources.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Architectural, Fine Art and Nature Photography. Also specializing in Aerial Photography and Video. What sets me apart is that every image I deliver is meticulously thought out, edited and created. I try to make each image something that can be appreciated on an artistic level.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Spend more time on marketing! Spend more time on marketing!
