Today we’d like to introduce you to Kendall Koehler.

Hi Kendall, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
About ten years ago, I had a major life change. I decided to enroll in beauty school and leave the corporate world. I didn’t know at the time, but the beauty school saved my life. I graduated and immediately began working for myself as a booth renter. That lasted about one year and I ventured out on my own. Mayhem Boutique Salon was born. As I continued to build my clientele, I worked in a corporate position to allow me to financially support the business. Once the business picked up, I left corporate permanently. I specialize in hair extensions. Two years ago, I traveled to Hong Kong and developed my own line of extensions. I use my line in addition to two other lines to meet my client’s desire for longer, more voluminous hair.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely been a journey! Each obstacle has been a lesson. I would hate to say it’s been a struggle. I am blessed to do what I love every day, so I’m learning lessons through each decision I make. Immediately venturing out on your own as a stylist is a really scary movie. I knew I wanted to work for myself. That being said, it took me longer to build my reputation and clientele than a stylist who works in an established salon. But here I am, TEN years later, with my own salon, my own product line and I work along with amazing stylists.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a hair extension expert and salon owner. I specialize in maintaining the integrity of my client’s hair while wearing extensions. I have long term extension wearers. It’s been a running “joke” that my clients say, “you will literally bury me in my extensions! I am a wearer for life!” I am known for creating my own line, Mayhem Hair Extensions. I have exclusivity with my factory and am the only line in the US. I have a 2.2g i-tip extension. I am most proud of how far I have come. I graduated from beauty school and immediately went out on my own. It’s a really difficult way to start in this amazing industry. I built my clientele and business from the ground up.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love Austin!! I am actually from here. A unicorn, I know! I love everything this city has to offer… food, outdoor life, dog friendly, music! It’s been crazy to watch the city change, but even though people are so negative about all the changes, I think it’s been great! I do miss some of the things that made Austin… but that is part of growth and change!
