Today we’d like to introduce you to Marissa Martinez.
Marissa, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I discovered permanent makeup via Instagram about two years ago and immediately became obsessed with the process and results. I originally just wanted my own eyebrows done, but as I got more and more interested, I realized I wanted to become an artist myself. Since then, I’ve taken three brow training, a lip training, color theory, and am currently enrolled in a few other courses for new services I’ll be offering in the New year! In the past two years, I have learned and grown so much both as an artist and as a business owner. I still work a full-time corporate job as well as balancing my PMU career and business. It is exhausting at times but beyond worth it. Starting my own business has taught me to trust my instincts, bet on myself, and to be more patient. I’m a big believer in the law of attraction and “mind over matter”, and ironically these beliefs are what I most frequently get tested on. I have wanted to quit countless times, but I’ve put too much of myself into this business to ever give up on it. Overcoming your own fears and limiting beliefs is the key to creating the life of your dreams! I know what I want and I know I’m heading towards that goal every single day, and this is what keeps me going.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It definitely has its challenges. I have wanted to throw in the towel too many times to count. (I have my boyfriend to thank for talking me out of quitting on multiple occasions.) Between being dissatisfied with my work, investing thousands into my education and supplies, hours upon hours of practice, and comparing my journey to other artists’, it has been no easy feat. What keeps me going is the feeling I get when my clients are amazed and grateful for their new look. Knowing that I could help give them a confidence boost and make their daily routine a little easier is so fulfilling! In these moments, I cannot deny that this is what I was meant to do. So no matter how difficult it gets, I will never give up on myself or my business.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a permanent make-up artist specializing in ombré brows and lip blushing. Permanent make-up is truly an art form. I create custom shapes and shades for each individual client to give them the most flattering and natural results. (No stencils over here!) I am most proud of my ability to give my clients some extra confidence and boost their self-esteem by providing my services. Many clients have told me I’ve changed their life! I know from experience that how you show up in the world is a direct result of how you feel about yourself. Feeling beautiful can truly change your outlook and overall presence! I strive to make personal connections with each of my clients. It’s just you and I for a couple of hours-so I try my best to make it enjoyable for both of us. I put them at ease by explaining the process step by step as I go, answering any questions, and agreeing on a shape and shade together. I am as transparent as I can possibly be so my clients are educated, know what to expect, and trust me as an artist.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Networking and having mentors is absolutely vital to your success. I work with my trainers and other local artists for support and advice as well as Facebook groups with artists from all over the world. There are so many different Facebook groups out there that are specific to your niché or line of work that you can turn to for advice or information. Even broader groups made for business owners are very helpful when it comes to the entrepreneur mindset. Making connections with others doing what you want to do, whether in real life at workshops or in online communities is going to make a huge difference in your entrepreneurial journey.
