Life & Work with Yogi Ramirez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yogi Ramirez.

Hi Yogi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born to a single mother in Juarez, Mexico where the opportunities are scarce, she decided our quality of life would better be suited in Austin, TX. Moving here as a six years old kid, I never imagined tattooing would impact my life to this degree. Fresh out of high school completely ignorant to the world of tattooing, I purchased a cheap “tattoo gun” to see a side of art I had never experienced. Sad to say, I immediately go to practicing on friends and family. Once I gathered some more insight, I understood that a proper apprenticeship was the staple of the tattoo world. Bouncing around from shop to shop, I collected any information that I could until I landed at the tattoo shop I called home for the next ten years. At some point, I felt that my knowledge intake hit a plateau and needed to make the tough choice of switching locations to Deep Well Tattoo in Round Rock, TX. Part of the tattooing career charm is the people and friends you make along the way. Leaving all my friends was extremely heartbreaking. But I knew I would never progress if I didn’t put myself in a much different environment than what I was used to. Today, I work very hard to consistently put out quality tattoos and as many in the style that I prefer doing. Tattooing has become a passion of mine that I can’t see myself turning my back on. It allows me to express my creativity in a way that really lasts a lifetime.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think anyone walks a true smooth road to achieve their goals, there is ups and downs all along the way. But I was and am very fortunate to have an awesome support group in friends and family that pushed me to be the artist/person I am today. I can only hope to repay at least one quarter of the support I have received.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
For the past ten years, I have been tattooing professionally. I prefer to tattoo more animated tattoos relating to anime and video games, but I don’t turn down tattoos in other styles. I also very much enjoy doing black and gray work. I am constantly trying to grow as a tattoo artist that is well-rounded. No tattoo is too small!

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
A good positive attitude is always needed to achieve any goals, In tattooing confidence is key. If you doubt yourself, the work will show that. Dedication and consistency have been the golden duo in my career. Being able to adjust and adapt will carry you through any design/tattoo that may seem like an obstacle. People do change their minds, and designs will have to be adjusted. Which lastly, good customer service sprinkled in the mix and you have the perfect mixture.
