Today we’d like to introduce you to Deidre Rodriguez
Hi Deidre, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started my journey with tarot and mediumship a couple of years ago when I moved to Austin. I’ve always been very interested in nature, the occult, and other “witchy” things but didn’t get a chance to dive into anything like that until recently. I bought my very first deck on a whim when I was going to college in North Carolina. I did zero research on tarot and really just got the deck for the artwork. It was the Mystic Faerie Tarot deck. It wouldn’t be until about 2019 when I truly began learning the art of cartomancy. Another local reader, Mak Jagger, took me under her wing and mentored me. She offers an amazing online tarot course through her Patreon page, and it did wonders for my development as a reader. With the education came the love I now have for the art of reading tarot. It has unlocked other gifts I didn’t realize I had and has helped me develop my sense of spirituality as well. The apothecary side of my business is still a slow work in progress, but I am cooking up recipes for soaps, candles, sprays, balms, and bath soaks. They all use essential oils, herbs and are blessed with specific intentions as I make them. While I don’t have much of a green thumb, I grew up around women who knew a lot about plants — it definitely sparked an interest.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Honestly, this didn’t start out as something I planned to make much money doing. It began as a hobby, and as I got better and more developed, I felt comfortable offering readings to people online. I made an Instagram and a Facebook page and was shocked by the interest people showed! As of now, yes, the road has been relatively smooth. I love having Hexe as a side-hustle to my day job and band. The biggest challenge so far has been building up the confidence to read for people. It took a while, but I’m at a place now where I’m confident in my own abilities and don’t feel the need to sell myself short.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
The way I read tarot is a bit less organized than most readers, I think. Everyone has their own style, and no style is particularly better or worse than another style. Personally, I rely very heavily on my intuitive ability and clairsentience/audience. I don’t tend to use spreads (Celtic Cross, etc) like a lot of other readers do. They have their time and place in my practice, but I really feel at home when I’m sitting with my deck and pulling cards until it feels like the entire message is available to me. As far as my specialty, I feel that one of my strengths as a reader is my ability to phrase and communicate readings in a way that is accessible to the general public. People who aren’t in the eclectic world might feel a little out of place if they can’t grasp what the cards are trying to tell them. I’ve been told I’m an organized speaker while I read, and that helps people feel less like they’re talking to the stereotypical fortune teller. Another unique service I offer is dream-interpretation. I’ve had very vivid and meaningful dreams for as long as I can remember, and I love helping people pick apart dreams they feel connected to. I have a process in which I implement tarot as a tool for decoding a client’s dream. A final and fun detail about how Hexe stands apart is the various types of decks I use. Tarot isn’t the only form of cartomancy — there are Lenormand and oracle cards, too. In fact, one of my very favorite decks is a vintage 1880 Lenormand deck from Germany. There’s something very romantic about using a deck that’s experienced so much history.
What matters most to you?
The more I read for people, the more I see just how much it helps people deal with life. I’ve read for people who want to know how their upcoming year was going to be, and I’ve also read for people who escaped abusive relationships and found validation in their choice from the cards. And everything in between! Being able to provide insight and guidance, and act as a vessel for the universe, means so much to me. I never thought I’d ever been in a position like this.
