Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Kool.
Hi Samantha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I am a licensed esthetician with advanced education and certification in oncology-safe esthetics. After 18 years as a small business owner in the staffing world, I made a life-changing decision to follow my heart into the world of esthetics and to specialize in the oncology space. After losing a tremendous number of loved ones to cancer throughout my life and feeling frustrated because I couldn’t help in any way, finding out about oncology-safe esthetics was a game-changer for me. I am now a proud member of the therapist team at Cancer Rehab and Integrative medicine www.cancerrehabaustin.com and own my own practice, Sava Face and Body www.savafaceandbody.com in North Central Austin. I specialize in oncology-safe gentle facials and body treatments for skin rejuvenation and healing. In addition, I offer a full retail line of products for at-home care including award-winning lines for sensitive and compromised skin; Hale and Hush and My Girls Skincare. Both of these lines are currently used in a variety of oncology facilities around the country. I have a solid referral network of professionals who also work in the oncology world and together, we commit to making a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer. It is my goal to continue to raise awareness for the oncology community about the importance of oncology safe skincare before, during, and after treatment.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Awareness and Covid have been the biggest challenges so far. Oncology safe esthetics is not a well-known field and therefore medical professionals don’t know about it to recommend it to their patients. There is also some hesitation from the medical community as to what the work actually is and how necessary and safe it is. Covid needs no explanation really but in my world it is simple, doctors do not always want to sign permission to treat forms for their patients to have skin care services based on the proximity we have to our clients on the table and the nature of the work in general. Although there are some wonderful modifications and precautionary guidelines for Covid considerations, skincare is always going to be done in a somewhat intimate setting where social distancing is more of a challenge.
How do you define success?
Success is having the confidence and ability to improve a person’s quality of life by what you do every day. There are of course more tangible things like developing a repeat client base, expanding business offerings and growing the business that are solid measurements of success but at the end of the day, if I know I am making a difference in a world where there can be so much pain and suffering, I am successful.
