Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelly Weiser.
Hi Shelly, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started when my kiddos were an infant and one year old. I am a graphic designer by trade and needed somewhere to go to just get things done for a few hours. Two years of research and planning later, The Hive opened its doors! Our original concept was on-site childcare with offices for rent and an open seating cafe area.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As with most small businesses, there have been many ups and downs. We had to quickly pivot when COVID hit the scene. We immediately closed the childcare and turned our space into a grocery market offering produce, toilet paper, dairy, etc. We were slowly able to re-open our dining room and are now a full-service coffee shop/cafe with a huge outdoor area geared for kids and family, as well as a full bar, movie nights, and live music. While the childcare aspect didn’t pan out, we realized how few family-focused restaurants there are in the area.
As you know, we’re big fans of The Hive. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Hive is a full-service coffee shop and cafe with a full bar. We are located in Far South Austin on a beautiful acre of land. We have a huge backyard with a garden, tables, live music stage, huge playscape, and games. We will soon be adding a full, hot dinner menu, as well as catering options for off-site events. Bring the kids, grab some dinner and a cold beer, and enjoy your night while the kids run free!
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
My family has been a HUGE support in this venture and they must be acknowledged. My husband Brent is one of the main reasons we are here today, supporting me both emotionally and physically (he LOVES to drive a front-loader on the weekends). My children are both hysterical, loving, and patient, and the reason The Hive ever came to be. My parents raised me to be the strong, entrepreneurial spirit that I am and have continued to help support in our business venture in many aspects (Mimi and Papa are amazing!).
