Today we’d like to introduce you to Serena Elizabeth.
Hi Serena, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up on 12 acres of land, nestled in the mesas of New Mexico with my Mother, Godparents and their children. My first great love was the nature of NM. I loved the dry heat and what seemed like endless nature to play in. My imagination was my greatest tool in so many ways. I would spend my summers hiking with my dogs and creating imaginary worlds where I fought the bad guys, rode dragons and saved the kingdoms from evil. An outsider looking into my life would assume I was a happy go lucky kid that was well cared for. Behind the curtains, behind the social stature my godparents built, were years and years of mental and physical abuse. You see, I was born into what society would deem a cult. Being born into something like this meant that what I experienced as a child, teenager and young adult just seemed…normal? During the week, I went to school like any other kid, and on the weekends, I learned and experienced unthinkable acts. This was how my life operated until my mid 20’s. My imagination, nature, and movement (or warrior training as I imagined it) gave me safety, happiness and strength.
Fitness was a required part of my routine and I started working out for esthetics when I was 15. My routine was inconsistent until I was introduced to a tool called the Steel Mace. The Steel Mace combined a workout and the warrior like training I was looking for. The Steel Mace shifted the way I approached….well everything!! I know I know, you’re thinking, “a piece of Steel changed your life?” Yes, in so many wonderful, at times terrifying and devastating ways.
Picking up a Steel Mace for my personal use was just the beginning. I became a fitness instructor and began teaching a movement system called Steel Mace Flow. Developed by my coach, now business partner Leo Savage, I would eventually progress to becoming Chief Operating Officer of the company and ascend to the role of Educator. I now am blessed with the gift of coaching Steel Mace Flow in my fitness-based classes at Black Swan Yoga called Hot Onnit as well as traveling the world certifying others to coach SMF.
Steel Mace Flow is first and foremost a flow based movement practice. The intention of this practice is to improve a practitioner’s mobility, shore up weakness, prevent injury and create full body strength that starts from the inside out. Beyond the movement, Steel Mace Flow is a practice of creation, expression, and freedom. Steel Mace Flow takes you from feeling stuck in a workout rut to having endless ways to move, express and workout.
Flow teaches us how important it is to be present in each waking moment.
When I free flow that is when I allow my energy lead the way. There is no right or wrong in these moments, there is only soaking in the unbridled joy, pain, and freedom in these moments. I include pain because so often we experience pain in the body, mind and in the soul.
Just as you should not deny when you experience joy, we should not deny when we experience pain.
Steel Mace Flow allows me so much gratitude and more space to simply play in Flow State. I like to create flows with storylines of magic, battle, and female badassery. This in turn allows me to show up better for my students. I teach them my methods and pour all my knowledge and education of Steel Mace Flow into our training sessions. I love coaching most out of everything I do. To see my students tap into their power and freely express their emotions and release in Steel Mace Flow is truly magical. Less anxiety, more confidence.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest struggle was overcoming the Victim Mentality that held me hostage while trying to move forward from my past. You see I was living in a fog, stuck in the imaginary world I had created as a haven for myself as a child. Again, I didn’t think anything was out of the norm with my life growing up. I’ve been “in this” since before I was born. I had yet to see or acknowledge that what I had experienced was so wrongs cruel, and exactly the reason behind my suicide attempts, depression and constant inner chatter of shame going on in my head. My warrior tool of badassery got me through, further than that, the practice I learned called Steel Mace Flow would be the practice to help me release pain with beautiful movement and meaning.
2021 my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and I again took to SMF as my way to decompress and show up for my loved ones. I stand with my head held high, knowing that with Mace in hands, I can and will overcome any opportunity for growth life extends to me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
