Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Damato.
Hi Joe, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
At the age of 22, I was working odd jobs with still no real direction for where I was supposed to do with my life, during this time I was dedicated to keeping my style out there. I would bleach my hair more than I should have and also would be a frequent client at the barbershop. During this time covid had just started to pick up and I decided to dive into my passion and go to barber school to see if during a hard time, I could make a change in my life. I knew nothing about cutting hair but through extreme determination and self-discipline, I am now a licensed professional barber at apothecaatx. I took a risk and came out on top.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been easy. I have lost many relationships in my life due to this passion. The time and dedication I put into this has tested me to my very core, whether it being not knowing the correct way to approach a hair service or just dealing with less than ideal people during my come up. It was not an easy road. There was many days I was ready to put up my clippers and never cut hair again. But instead this further motivated me to keep going.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a barber that has a passion for outside of the box design. Some of my favorite work to do is to do bald fades and fashion hair color. I have recently been getting more into hair designs as well as getting more detailed in my craft. I am most proud of how I have been self-taught in this journey. I have been obsessed with watching Instagram reels, youtube tutorials or just in general I have been shadowing in school and the shop like it is my job (which ironically it is now). I am a very personable person I think that my passion for what I do sets me aside from others. There is not a day that goes by that I feel like I work an actual job. I feel that I am merely doing what I love to do and I have more fun the more I work on hair each and every day.
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I am very passionate about helping people in my community. I have a strong belief that a haircut can change the way you feel and express yourself to the world, I want people to stand up from my chair and feel themselves not only because of the way that they look but the experience that they have in my chair through conversation and overall being heard.
