Today we’d like to introduce you to Jazmin Moreno.
Hi Jazmin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My story started when I was eight years old, living in Denver, CO; my sister, grandparents, and I. My family was not your modern family, but my biggest blessing. I had to learn and grow up fast, but I wouldn’t want it any other way. I now see a different perspective in life because of this. As a child, I found a way to escape my reality. In the 3rd grade, I had an art class that opened the door to my creative side. I learned about different mediums, such as making clay pots and working with watercolors. I started to sketch and work on random art projects on my own. It was then that I realized I had a passion for creating.
My family and I moved back to my hometown of El Paso, TX, in 2005. In the first four years of living in El Paso, I didn’t have art class, so my escape became sports. I played basketball and volleyball for the last two years in middle school. I fell in love with being a part of a team and helping accomplish a goal.
When high school came around, I was a part of the art club and a starter on the basketball and volleyball team.
My passion grew from creating to helping others succeed and being a part of a team. My creative side later expanded to photography. Once I graduated from high school, I wanted to be a photographer. However, plans changed, and I ended up not attending college at that time. I couldn’t decide which major to pursue. After graduating high school, I moved back to Denver, CO, to residency.
Meanwhile, I was still deciding on a major/college to attend. I stayed in Colorado up until the year 2019. That was the year that changed it all for me. I came across a gem show that my sister and I went to. I accepted a full-time job for a Gemstone and Mineral industry company, which helped me see a different perspective. It led me to my current passion, a creator of handmade jewelry and a promotor for mixed media art.
Being around people from different cities and meeting many creators along this journey has been an absolute blessing and honor. It was then that I knew this was the journey I wanted to take. I am inspiring others, and others are inspiring me. Before the pandemic, I later moved to Austin, TX, for a better opportunity to share the many perspectives and talented people I get to meet. I am here today, working with a support team and making connections along the way. The journey has only just begun!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth ride building and learning how to manage a business and personal life, and this has been the biggest challenge yet. Some of the struggles I had along the way would be staying consistent and staying positive. I wear many hats, which takes a lot of time and consistency. I have a great support system from my family and friends, which is my advantage.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I work as a sales rep for the company at the gem shows about three times a year. I currently work full time with a customer support team at a local art facility in the North Austin/Pflugerville area. Along with my regular 9-5 job, I work on the handmade jewelry business my sister and I created. I guess you can say I specialize in helping others and ensuring we succeed in what we do. My background story and who I am today set me apart from others. I have a bright light, with a passion for helping others. Not everyone has a support system to motivate them and keep them accountable, so I want to be that for those who have a passion for creating- whatever that may be for you!
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
For those just starting, make sure you know how to manage your money and understand the legal requirements needed for your business, such as trademarks and tax writeoffs. I can advise you to find something you are passionate about and work towards it 100%. If not one hundred percent, give it 10 % each day and never give up on yourself!
