Conversations with Casey Mathis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Casey Mathis.

Casey, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Mathis Designs is a husband and wife-owned company. We are based in Dripping Springs and work in the greater Austin area. I, Casey Mathis, have a degree in Horticulture. Before starting my business, I worked on organic farms, managed greenhouses, and was a buyer for a local plant nursery. Jason, my husband, is a metal fabricator, builder, and former electrician. Before our business, he worked in local fabrication shops building and installing neon signs and metal sculptures. While working at our previous jobs, we have been building a cabin on our property. To make supplemental income to support this, we would plant trees, design garden spaces, and fabricate custom metalwork in our spare time. Over the years of doing this, our demand began to rise and we kept getting job requests that were too large to accomplish just after work and on weekends. So we decided to combine forces and talents and go all in with Mathis Designs. We have since finished building the cabin, which will be listed on Airbnb later this year. And we have grown Mathis Designs alongside that! We are a small, boutique company that’ specializes in native plantings, hardscapes, and custom metalwork. We have a small, all female crew and are 100% turnkey. So, we don’t subcontractor anything out, which allows us to be hands on throughout the entire process. Even though it’s a lot of hard work, it allows us to do something different each day. We can really build on different skills and it’s so much fun! We’ve been able to get where we are today through client and colleague referrals. We are so grateful to have the trust of our clients to bring our creativity to life.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
We’ve been really fortunate to have longstanding relationships with other landscapers, plant nursery’s, and horticulture folks. Because of this, we’ve had great referrals. There’s an amazing community of women designers in Austin who support each other. We started small so the biggest struggle has just been keeping up with the demand and trying to stay as efficient as possible.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We specialize in transforming outdoor spaces. We only use local and native materials. This sets our designs up to withstand a lifetime of enjoyment. As we have grown, we have become known for our hardscapes. We build a lot of patios and decks. We love designs that incorporate many different elements. We are really proud of some of the dry creeks we have built that also incorporate native plantings. What sets us apart is that we are completely turnkey and always overdeliver. We will usually plant something extra or special or incorporate a last minute idea that really enhances the space. Because we are hands on throughout the entire process, we get to live in the space and see it come to life and how it changes throughout the day. So this allows us to go above and beyond from our original plan.

What’s next?
Right now, we have some large scale projects lined up for the rest of the year that we are really excited to break ground on. That being said, we enjoy working in small projects too. No big changes planned but excited to continue to learn and grow.
