Rising Stars: Meet Alex Hoffman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Hoffman.

Hi Alex, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Lived in a supportive household but like most families, we moved around due to my dad’s job, got interested in music at a very early stage and decided I wanted to something in the industry. I think I started in music right after high school with shadowing in town venues for sound guys/studios for experience, usually just wrapping cables. Eventually, this lead to me being a studio musician for those who don’t always know an instrument when it comes to recording; this is also around the time where I realized performing music was my passion and picked writing more. Somewhere along the way, I realized music was dying around me and made the decision to essentially start again and move somewhere with people like me, so I saved up everything and moved out here to Austin, Texas (2019) knowing nobody. Living here has been the greatest decision I’ve ever made. Now I write and record what I want to hear out there, pushing to finally release a record this or next year.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Financially being a musician is hard (of course) but because of this city and its people, I’ve had the ability to grow. I think I’ve made every grilled cheese under the sun. Have had to leave people behind along the way, but that comes with life I guess? COVID-19 and was wanting to avoid this topic; I kind of treat Covid like an ex-girlfriend ruined my life and is still popping up to mess up more. Especially when your world revolves around building a crowd, I cant put on a 5$ show to risk someone getting a 500k medical bill or ya know dying. Has been driving me nuts mentally.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Music at night and data input by day essentially. Was doing foley art for minute, was fun but felt goofy sitting in a closet hitting pans together. (foley art is essentially sound effect recording)

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Show up and reach out, in my experience just keeping at it to being a remembered face spoke volumes.
