Rising Stars: Meet Ellie Chavez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ellie Chavez.

Hi Ellie, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Before I ever started pursuing photography, I knew I wanted to tell stories. They’ve been brewing in my mind for as long as I can remember. Writing (though I was never great at it) was my first love and a love that largely led me to where I am now.

I’ve been practicing photography for over ten years. It was basically written in the stars once I got a camera of my own at the age of twelve. First, it was just about total freedom of having my own little box that could hold my most important moments inside of it. It was fun and it kept being fun. Nothing else had been more fun in my life. Of course, what else was I going to do as a twelve or thirteen-year-old kid than find somewhere to post them online?

I started posting to Flickr and finding other artists there was what opened my eyes to the kind of magic I could really be making. Artists like Brooke Shaden and Joel Robinson showed me that there’s much more interesting things to take pictures of than colored pencils arranged in a rainbow. Once I found that I could create conceptual, meaningful images that dripped with color and creativity, it was like I found the key for the rest of my life. As my business started getting off the ground a bit more, I kept that with me. It’s on my mind every time I work with someone. How do I make sure they shine through in these photos? How can I connect with them? Even if our time spent together is short, the photos are forever, and I do my best to really make that count.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not. However, I started my business when I was thirteen, so a lot of the struggles were really just growing pains. The bright side of that was I had the luxury of being able to experiment with things, fail a lot, edit about a million different ways, and learn from mistakes. I had awful websites, worked sketchy gigs, and dealt with a lot of skepticism.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do portraiture and weddings and specialize in vibrant, true to color photography! I’m most proud of my ability to create a comfortable environment and make quick decisions, which is important in portraiture but most important in wedding photography. What sets me apart is perhaps my dedication. Every time my camera clicks, it’s preserving a legacy. I do everything I can to make your legacy authentic and beautifully recognizable.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
