Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Criswell.
Hi Sarah, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My creative journey started right after high school, I got the opportunity to work with a group of renowned talented artists in a studio environment, I got exposed to beautiful African sculpture and got hands-on experience on a variety of art techniques.
While in college, I was able to express my art aesthetic in thru Digital Media, I created experimental videos which explored women issues at a time when streaming video was not as fast and easy as it is today. My earlier works were about interconnectedness, my favorite subject was and is still representing women issues. As a woman, I feel that I need to create a world I want to see, I like to explore different cultures, I love colorful, bold, in your face color, color makes me happy.
My goal is to continue creating powerful visual images of women focused on a cultural subtext.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I wouldn’t say they were struggles, just timing. There were times when I needed to focus on college, or raising children, or work so art kind of took a back seat. I still did art but not as much as I would have wanted to. I dreamt about it, made sketches, filled my journal with ideas for future projects.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
The one thing that sets me apart is my passion and consistency. I have always worked on a project no matter how small. I have friends who are still amazed that I still do art, it’s in my blood. It’s my happy place.
What I am known for? I don’t limit myself I experiment with any media I get my hands on. I have do video art, oils, acrylics, pastels, graphite, and my new obsession resin.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in the suburbs of Nairobi, I was a curious child, I used to collect things that I thought I would make something with, I once made flowers out of dyed paper, my mom’s friends were so impressed I ended up making a few bucks, my first art commission if I may say so.
