Hidden Gems: Meet Caroline Cook of Red Cactus Media

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Cook.

Hi Caroline, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I got my start at the renowned recording studio Tequila Mockingbird in Austin, Texas. During my time at the studio, I helped produce several national radio and television spots, including campaigns for McDonald’s, Sonic, and Southwest Airlines. After working with Tequila Mockingbird, I began working with actor and comedian Amy Poehler in Los Angeles, serving as her right-hand woman and executive assistant. My work with Poehler included two Golden Globe awards (both of which Poehler hosted), two Emmy Awards, two seasons of NBC’s Parks and Recreation and Comedy Central’s hit television show Broad City (exec. produced by Poehler). I also served as the associate producer for Poehler’s Youtube channel, Smart Girls at the Party, which focuses on empowering young women. My experience in the ad and film industries led to me writing and producing original content for companies such as the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater, Elite Daily, YouTube, AfterEllen, The Advocate and TxDot. In 2017, I joined forces with business partner and life partner Rebekah Wood to create a company to work with primarily women and LGBTQIA people making the world a better place.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’ve learned from my peers starting a business can be as strenuous and stressful as you make it. My main focus is consistency, hard work, staying mentally and physically healthy and keeping positive thoughts. It can definitely be a challenge sometimes! I read Jen Sincero’s book You Are a Badass at Making Money and it totally changed my life. I owe it to her and my life partner/business partner for helping me have the courage to launch Red Cactus Media.

As you know, we’re big fans of Red Cactus Media. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?

We work with business leaders, entrepreneurs, speakers, authors, coaches, non-profits, actors, inventors, musicians, builders, and dreamers. We pride ourselves in working with people who are changing the world and making a difference… and we’re damn proud of that. We’re proud of our work with J.R. Martinez, The Blackwell Hotel, Brightside Wash & Fold, Binxcorp, Guaranteed to Wrinkle, Christopher Stuart Cast Stone and all of our amazing clients! “Simply Put: our purpose is to help our clients FEEL GOOD ABOUT MARKETING.” The digital space can be overwhelming and, oftentimes, off-putting. We get it. That’s why we make a point of effectively communicating our processes, strategies, and methods in a way our clients can understand, so you’re never left guessing where your time, money and efforts are going.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk-taking?
I live by the quote, “Do one thing every day that scares you.” I believe there’s risk in everything! It’s risky to start your own business, but it’s just as risky working a 9-5. At any moment, your business could fail or your boss could fire you. Life is about risk. Enjoy it.
