Meet Julie Korioth of Speak As One

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julie Korioth.

Hi Julie, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I struggled with mental health most of my life but never thought I’d be someone who would need to stop drinking or go to a trauma retreat. I was always someone who could manage my mental health issues or hide them away – until I couldn’t anymore. It was scary and I felt alone. So I created a space where other people experiencing that type of loneliness could see other people’s struggles and hear how they worked through them. That’s why I care – I’ve experienced these issues firsthand.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I’m a private person so it took me a while to feel comfortable putting myself out there on camera. Miend was our name in the beginning, but after my small team came together and offered their advice we relaunched as Speak As One. I struggle with imposter syndrome, and of course fundraising is a challenge that most entrepreneurs have to feel their way through.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Speak As One is a mental health channel that produces and publishes videos weekly with people telling their personal stories of mental health struggles and what they did to get help. By creating conversations and not simply telling people what to do, our viewers can see and hear people talking openly and honestly about mental health. The conversation element is what sets us apart, and our content will remain free – we offset those costs with monthly fees for access to our upcoming list of mental health resources (think: Angi’s List for mental health) and from subscriptions to our monthly Mind Box. I’m proud of our brand logo, which was inspired by the idea that everyone, despite our differences, can come together and talk about mental health.

What were you like growing up?
I was shy, reserved, soft-spoken but very friendly and always loved connecting with people. I participated in gymnastics, choir, and student council.
