Conversations with Gabi Hurtado

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabi Hurtado.

Hi Gabi, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
How I became a Makeup Artist is actually a funny story, I’ve always been creative since I was a girl coloring, drawing, painting, etc. but never did I think I would be in the beauty industry. Growing up I was your typical “tomboy” running around outside playing on the playground, playing soccer or tag with the other kids in my neighborhood. Of course my dreams as a kid and teenager were a lot different from my current goals and dreams as an adult now, but back then I pictured myself being a Veterinarian, Painter, Pilot in the Air Force, or a Pro Volleyball player however, I think we can all attest that life always has different plans for us. I started doing makeup in 2015 when YouTube was hot and Makeup influencers were the it thing. I remember watching a Nikki Tutorial videos while I was recovering from a knee injury and thinking to myself “I can do that”. Fast forward to now, seven years later, self-taught and love what I do. Being a makeup artist has opened so many doors for me and has allowed me to try and find other passions in the beauty community such as getting my Esthetics License to provide skin care for my clients.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As a makeup artist and aesthetician, I have definitely had my fair share of challenges, the main one being self-doubt. Being in the beauty industry, there’s so many people doing the exact same thing you do and you can get into a mindset of not being good enough, questioning your worth as well as the worth of your business and start comparing yourself to others. What I’ve learned in these 7 years of being in the industry is you can’t compare yourself to others and to just take it day by day, and stay in your lane and most importantly DO YOU BOO! Surround yourself with like minded people who will support you.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I like to say I’m a jack of all trades when it comes to my career but specialize in editorial makeup and Full Glam, Hydrafacial, Anti-Aging and corrective facial treatments. Recently I’ve been getting into more prosthetic work and gory make up, I love to do anything that’s more on the creative side. I would say what sets me apart is that I am self-taught when it comes to my makeup artistry and I’ve always been able to change with the times and keep up with the current trends.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, I was definitely a quiet kid and I kind of kept to myself. Like I said earlier, I was always creative in coloring and drawing and painting if I wasn’t doing that, I was outside playing at the playground or playing with my puppy dogs.

Having Gabby in my life since she was born it’s been great watching her create and what hands it’s amazing to me how creative she is I absolutely hate the ugly faces that she posts cuz she’s such a beautiful girl it’s hard to picture her and that what do you call a ghoulish makeup but she’s something else that’s for sure
