Conversations with Yoli Castillo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yoli Castillo.

Hi Yoli, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Born & raised in the beautiful city of ATX. I was told by a client that I am a unicorn because Austinites are rare. I love it and I have told everyone that I meet who is born & raised here what we are known as.

When I graduated high school, I went straight into the medical field as an Administrative Assistant. I stayed in that field for 15+ years. I was never satisfied with what I was doing, so I was always looking for more ways to earn money quick so I could put myself through cosmetology school. After ten years with my last employer, I was laid off for the second time. So I took that as a sign to finally go back to school at the age of 37. I was finally entering a point in my life where I knew I was going to have a career that I love and actually calling that work. So being laid off was the biggest blessing in disguise. I graduated cosmetology school in 2016 and started my career in the beauty industry and have not looked back once.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
At the time, being 37 and a mom of 3 and putting myself through beauty school was a struggle at times. I went to school full time during the day and worked a very part-time job in retail at night and on the weekends. Some days I would have to study and prepare for tests, but then I would think of the other million things I had to at home or I would be really tired so a lot of that was put on the backburner. There were times where I thought I was “too old” to be making a career change and the thought of building a clientele was so scary. Many times I wanted to quit and reapply for office jobs because thats what I knew how to do for so long, but I knew I would have been settling if I went backwards. Having a good support system and the right people in your corner will keep you on track. So giving up was not an option for me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Licensed Cosmetologist that specializes in lash extensions & brows. I chose the category of an artist because in my experience over the last 5+ years, I have created many beautiful sets all from the shape and natural lashes of someone’s eye. It gives my client and myself instant gratification when they wake up from a lash nap. I take pride in my work and I do so with making sure not to compromise the integrity or health of someone’s natural lash. I know that may sound silly to someone who does not know what a Lash Artist does. There are so many ways lash extensions are applied, but in my practice and with the constant trends evolving I make sure to receive continued education in my industry and to stay up to date with all sanitary precautions in my studio. There are always new trends and new styles coming up on Instagram so I know eventually it will be the next big thing. So what sets me apart from others is that I never stop learning. I invest in my career and I always want to learn as much as I can.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
If you have ever been in my lash recliner, we are almost always listing to True Crime podcasts. In my spare time when I’m alone, I usually listen to Lash Boss radio, Dear Lash Love diaries, but 99.9% of the time it’s the true crime for me. Here are some of my favorites:

– Dateline
– Crime Junkies
– Something was wrong
– Dr. Death
– Motive for Murder
