Meet Sarita Day

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarita Day.

Sarita, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I didn’t realize I wanted to be a writer until I turned 13. I started reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone one day, opening to the sorting hat scene. Something about it made me realize I wanted to write my own story. That very day, I wrote out the first chapters of my first novel. I did it by hand on loose-leaf paper. Needless to say, that books has never seen the light of day. But my craft has only grown as I’ve learned more about writing. And now, 20 years later, I’m finally publishing my work!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Self-doubt has heavily impacted my career. I always relied heavily on what outsiders thought of me and my work. So much so I wouldn’t put faith into my work if a big publishing company didn’t. It took years for me to take control of my own destiny. The only person who can make my dreams come true is me.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer of YA/NA novels. In 2017, I self-published my NA novella Sad, Brown Eyes. It is my first steampunk world!

My novel, Fitzgerald, will release on May 2, 2022. It is different than any YA out currently. Authors like to use Pinterest to find an aesthetic for their stories, sharing them on TikTok and Instagram. When I searched, nothing came close to my novel’s aesthetic. I’m taking that as a positive! It is a unique story with all readers’ favorite YA vibes.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Don’t be afraid to take chances. If I waited for the perfect moment or the perfect person to come along, my work would still be sitting on my computer. No one would have the opportunity to read it.

I also took a chance to start a photography business. It is still new, but I’m taking a chance to photograph couples and family, bringing another joy to the people of Austin.
