Hidden Gems: Meet Duncan McNair of McNair Health and Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Duncan McNair

Hi Duncan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my health and fitness career as a CrossFit coach. I first heard about CrossFit in 2013 when I saw the CrossFit Games on TV. I remember thinking I wanted to look and perform like those guys. I would say my journey started when I was playing division 1 college baseball in Arkansas. I hated it. All I could think about was finally being able to start CrossFit. I ended my baseball career after that season and joined a gym near where I was going to college. I jumped at the first offer to intern and soon become a coach. Fast forward 4 years, my wife and I moved to Austin. I met someone at the gym I work at that offered to help me build my personal training business, specifically with online training. I’m still coaching CrossFit but during quarantine I was able to start my own online health and fitness business which focuses on in person/online training and online nutrition coaching. As of January 1st, my LLC became active. I’m currently trying to grow my business and create a community of healthy, confident, and strong people.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been a lot of struggles. I left my baseball career so I felt like a failure During my early CrossFit years, I struggled with knowing what to do. I didn’t have a coach which meant I had no guidance. This led to a lot of training mistakes, wasted time, injury, and frustration. Overall I was self-conscious of my looks, I ate poorly, and I was always dealing with back pain. I was struggling to grow and I didn’t like who I was.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business offers in-person and remote training as well as remote nutrition coaching. My goal is to help people feel confident, full of energy, and pain free with their training and in life. I don’t give out generic workout or nutrition plans. Part of my coaching style is getting to know the client. What are their struggles and desires? What is their life like beyond the gym? etc. I work with each client to create a personalized plan that works with their lifestyle to deliver them awesome, life changing results. When coaching clients, I go beyond the weights. Though working out and eating right is the overall theme, I help clients build small, daily habits that make their training/diet more sustainable and productive!

What were you like growing up?
Athletic and a bit awkward! In high school and college I was very disciplined but a bit too serious. I’m typically a more shy/introverted person. The only time I’m not is when I’m coaching. I was naturally inclined toward sports and have always been very competitive. Growing up I loved playing video games or playing ball outside.
