Exploring Life & Business with Jimmy Yen of Achieve Integrative Health

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jimmy Yen.

Jimmy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My parents were first generation immigrants and growing up I saw them struggle, working 2-3 jobs every week, and we still needed government assistance to live. They raised me in the typically tiger parent fashion, at least I think that’s what it’s called. Basically, the focus was on getting good grades, and that’s what I did and it was good enough to get me into UT Austin where I graduated with a bachelor’s in Biochemistry. My original plan was to go to Vet school afterwards, but close to graduation I met the woman of my dreams, at church, and had to make a decision. Do I pursue vet school, which would require me to move to College Station, or do I pursue the woman of my dreams and stay in Austin? Obviously I chose to stay in Austin, pursue my wife and enroll into Traditional Chinese Medical School in 2001. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is part of my culture and growing up my parents infused TCM into our lifestyle, so enrolling in TCM School felt like I was returning to my roots.

After graduating in 2004, I partnered with another acupuncturist to open my first acupuncture clinic. Never having built a business, our clinic struggled and after 8 months we had to shut it down. I was then at another crossroad in my life, do I still continue to pursue my passion of Traditional Chinese Medicine or do I give up and pursue another profession. Well, I chose to give up on TCM and enrolled in Nursing School in Lubbock, TX. So I moved to Lubbock, but my wife had to stay in Austin for her job. After 1 month of being apart, we came to the realization that living in 2 different cities wasn’t healthy for our marriage and so I made the decision to return back to Austin and give TCM another try, and open my own acupuncture clinic by myself. There was one big problem, we didn’t have any money to open my clinic.

You see, when my wife and I got married in 2001, her parents had just lost everything, like everything, their house, their savings, and they didn’t have any income. So they instantly became financially dependent on my wife and myself. My wife had just started her first job and had the burden of supporting our family of four. It was a difficult time as we barely had enough money for basic living necessities and I had a $100k student debt. So in order to open my clinic I had to be creative, and I found a credit card that offered $10k loan with no interest for one year and that’s how I opened my clinic in 2007. I had to succeed, it wasn’t an option. People talk about burning their ships, well, my ships were already burned for me, failure was not an option. I did whatever it took to succeed, which included working 90 hours per week for over 1 year.

Through sheer determination I was profitable in my first month of business and was able to pay back the credit card loan after 6 months. My practice was growing exponentially that I was frequently moving into a bigger office every 3-4 years, and at that time my landlord told me I was their fastest- growing business in their business park.

15 years later, I have the largest Acupuncture clinic in Austin, TX, and guess what? We’re moving into a bigger office again in June 2022, this will be our 5th office.

Back in 2007, I looked for mentors among my own community and got rejected so I made a promise to myself that I would be the change and so in 2019, I started my 2nd company, Achieve Practice Automation, which is a coaching and consulting company to help holistic healthcare practitioners build the practice and life of their dreams.

My wife and I worked our butt off for over ten years and in 2017 we were able to achieve financial freedom and retire in our early 40s. We still grind seven days a week, but the difference now is we are grinding to pay it forward versus before we were grinding for ourselves and our family. I have 2 missions in life, the first is to help 1 million people restore their body’s natural ability to heal itself so that they can do the things they love. My 2nd mission is to help 1 million holistic healthcare practitioners achieve their definition of freedom.

Gandhi said “Be the change you want to see in the world”

And that’s what my wife and I, now in our mid-40s, are spending the rest of our lives to use our knowledge, success and resources to pay it forward to the next generation.

As you know, we’re big fans of Achieve Integrative Health. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Achieve Integrative Health is the #1 Acupuncture clinic in Austin. We specialize in helping with neurological conditions, chronic pain and complementary cancer care. Our expertise in helping people suffering with Neuropathy was recognized by the Austin community and local neurologists and because of that, I was invited to be on the Medical Advisory Committee for a non-profit, Neuropathy Alliance of Texas, as the only Acupuncturist alongside four of Austin’s top neurologist.

Our reputation has been built on 2 pillars: RESULTS & SERVICE. We are known for producing Fast AND sustainable Results. It’s one thing to be able to help people achieve their health goals, it’s another thing to help those results stick. We are also the only Acupuncture clinic in Austin and probably the whole United States that provide 5 star concierge service. If you’ve ever been in a 5 star hotel like the 4 Seasons Hotel & Resort then you know what we mean by 5 star service. We modeled our concierge service after the 4 Seasons Hotel, as they are known internationally for their 5 star service, and we hope to be the first Acupuncture Clinic Group to achieve that international recognition also.

Our mission is to help 1 million people restore their body’s natural ability to heal itself so that they can do what they love.

We believe “Anything is ACHIEVE-able”

The reason for our massive success in treating neurological disorders is because of 2 things:

1) QRA (Quick Relief Acupuncture) = this is a technique that I created that produces faster results than any other acupuncture technique

2) FPD (Functional Pulse Diagnosis) = this is a diagnostic system I created to help us pinpoint a patient’s organ dysfunction and what herbs are need to restore the organ function.

What separates us from all of our competition:

1) Faster and sustainable results

2) 5 star service

3) Communication = we make health discussions simple, our patients understand what is going on with their health, our treatments, and how we are going to help them

4) we have the most 5 star google reviews

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?

I have 6 Core Values I live by:

1) Transparency = this is the simplest way to live life, be transparent with everybody, yes I may offend some people, but at least everybody I speak to will know everything I tell them is the truth, and this includes our patients. We are 100% transparent with our patients and that’s why our patients trust us and look to us when making health decisions.

2) Service Above Self = Our Patients are our #1 priority, period. Life is about experiences, and we focus on providing a 5-star service for our patients which requires us to be patient-centered. Happy Patients leads to a happy team which leads to a happy me. Just like Happy wife, happy life =).

3) Committed = I stay committed to my goals, because if I can’t even commit to myself, how the hell will I be able to be committed to my team and our patients. Staying 100% committed to your goals is vital for success.

4) Accountable = I hold myself, my team and our patients accountable, and vice versa. No accountability results in QUITTING. Nobody wins when anybody quits.

5) Inspirational = I walk my talk, I will never tell my team or our patients to do something I’ve never done myself. Also, I use my story of rags to riches to inspire my team to know that if you put in the work and don’t quit you can achieve more success than you could ever imagine.

6) Results-Oriented = Results are the bottom line, if my clinic doesn’t generate results, we would not be the largest acupuncture clinic in Austin. It is because of the fast and sustainable results that our clinic consistently generates that we have patients fly in from out of state and drive from cities all over texas to get treatments in our clinic.
