Check Out Carolina Yanez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carolina Yanez.

Hi Carolina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I started photography back in high school when I took photos for the yearbook and newspaper. I was primarily a reporter but I got more and more into photography. In college, I started pursuing Fine Art photography and began practicing in analog processes. I’m now a third-year student and plan to continue on practicing photography and more interdisciplinary approaches.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Photography and art is male-dominated so sharing my work can sometimes be intimidating. I have a good support system behind my art, but I’m still trying to navigate through gender and racial barriers. Art can also be very elitist, and I’m trying to change this dynamic to be more inclusive to those who don’t necessarily have access to higher education. Art can be admired and shared with everyone and should be.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I shoot all different types of subjects. I like portraits, landscape, architecture, wildlife, documentary, anything! For my fine art practice, I like to focus on gender and racial disparities, mental illness and social relationships. I mostly portray myself and my experiences in my art, but I’m looking to expand to other BIPOC communities.

What does success mean to you?
I think success is what makes you proud and happy and feeling like you made a difference in someone’s life. Through my work, I like sharing my experience so others who endure the same don’t have to feel alone or isolated. If you’re able to impact someone’s life in a positive light, I see that as success.
