Life & Work with Morgan Phillips

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Phillips.

Hi Morgan, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in Central Pennsylvania on a 10 acre horse ranch-ette. My dad had done rodeo and my family had that “western style” that is not super common where I came from. I grew up and was never very interested in dressing like them, riding horses, or really anything you’d consider “western”.

After college, I ended up moving back home and for some reason, became really interested in the western lifestyle even though we had sold our property. I started going to more rodeos and adding bits of turquoise or aztec to all my outfits. As I became more confident, I’d add a little more flare. Eventually, I started sharing my outfits on Tiktok and Instagram. My Tiktok’s started blowing up, and being entrepreneurial, I saw a gap in the western fashion industry. Plus, size girls were largely underserved. I had the thought to start a boutique that focused on mid and plus-sized western fashion.

My first launch was five graphic tee’s. They sold out pretty much right away. I kept investing my profits back into the business and by seven months, we had become a 6-figure business. We’re at about a year and a half now and it continues to grow. I also made the move down to Stephenville to continue to grow my business in a place I fell in love with.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
There’s definitely been challenges. I’d be naive to think there wouldn’t be starting a boutique during a global pandemic. That being said, there’s been a lot of positives in that, too. I also worked a full-time marketing business while doing this so I’ve become a pro at time management. Between what I already mentioned and a cross-country move, this past year and a half have been a blur. But so fun and so worth it!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I own an online western boutique that specializes in mid and plus-size fashion. I’m most proud of the community I’ve built alongside of this business. I’ve had customers turn into best friends. There’s group chats between my customers. I’ve gotten a lot of feedback that the community is what they all love most and what keeps them coming back.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I’m outside of Austin, but I chose to move to Texas because it’s honestly the best. I’ve really never heard anyone say one thing bad about it. Everyone who lives here loves it and they’re proud to say they’re from Texas. You can’t find that most places.
