Community Highlights: Meet Gabrielle Brulotte of Hot Take

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Brulotte.

Gabrielle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My sister and co-founder Elise started Hot Take because we felt like we were missing a dessert that fits into our lifestyle. A high-quality dessert that could live in your freezer, ready to be eaten whenever you felt like it. Whether that’s one just for yourself or 10 for you and the people you care about. We wanted to make the best cookie ever while using really high-quality ingredients. No palm oil, really good chocolate, and organic ingredients. We started naively in 2020 shipping frozen dough to friends and family in Washington, where we grew up, but now work with a fulfillment company with warehouses in both Ohio and Northern California to ship out our cookie dough that gets bought during our weekly dough drops. We have since moved the business to Austin and are focused on building a brand a community that believes that dessert is part of a balanced lifestyle. You can go to your early morning yoga class and make green juices, but also go to happy hour with friends and eat cookies.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No!!! Haha! Shipping frozen is a struggle. We originally had people get warm dough because our shipping process was done by ourselves and wasn’t streamlined. One time we had 60 orders get sent back to us because we accidentally bought the wrong shipping label so 60 orders of dough went warm and no one got dough on time. Throwing away all that dough was heartbreaking. We had to change our name due to trademark issues halfway through our rebrand–we used to be Gooey! Trying to nail down fair-trade, organic chocolate during the supply shortage has been a nightmare. But it’s all the highs and lows of entrepreneurship. Keeps it all exciting.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
We sell frozen take-and-bake style cookie dough. It is made with over 70% organic ingredients, fair-trade organic chocolate, and we use no oil blends or palm oil. We ship direct to consumers with dry ice so our dough arrives frozen. Once it gets to you, it is good for about six months in the freezer so we encourage our customers to just eat the amount of cookies that they want to eat at one time. Warm cookies are better anyway! We have one SKU as of right now, our Salted Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough. All of our orders come with Maldon Sea Salt packets so you can top your cookie dough Sea Salt.

You can buy our dough during our dough drops that happen every week. The best way to stay tuned about our dough drops is to follow us on social media or sign up for our newsletter.

I am so proud of putting out the exact product that I want to live in my home.

We took no shortcuts with quality.

I really want to emphasize that cookies ARE part of a balanced lifestyle. That is our hot take.

How do you think about happiness?
Simple life moments. Drinking my extra hot coffee in the morning, sitting in the sunshine, having a beer and good conversation, warm summer nights. With my life being so chaotic with the business and me not being able to fully disconnect, I try to take vacation in moments of everyday life and I think it’s been therapeutic in its own way.

Pricing:

  • 35+shipping for one bag of dough
  • 70 + free shipping for 2 bags of dough
  • 90 + free shipping for 3 bags of dough
