Rising Stars: Meet Joe Welbes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joe Welbes.

Hi Joe, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Growing up in the suburbs of Houston, Texas, I found an escape through dance, music, and photography. I moved out at an early age to San Francisco to pursue a career in classical ballet. After a few years, I joined the National Ballet of Canada, which took me to Toronto, ON. Throughout my dance career, I had a camera in hand documenting the streets and alleys of the cities I called home. Fast forward to today, I continue to roam and shoot as often as possible in Austin, TX.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The only struggles I’ve encountered would probably be time and money. I wish I had more time to hone my craft and shooting with film is so dang expensive in today’s day and age.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I think that, because I’m self-taught, I have a unique pov when it comes to photography and I feel free to make mistakes along the way. I don’t want to be known for shooting any one way or style, I want to explore every aspect of the art form. That’s one of the beauties of photography – there’s so many different ways to do it.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
I haven’t had any mentors per se but there are a bunch of photographers I’m inspired by. Everyone from Walker Evans and William Eggleston to Mel D. Cole and Daniel Arnold, I look at their work and think how the hell did they do that? How do these moments in time conjure up so much emotion? And the positive feedback on IG and most recently on a show I did confirm that I’m on the right track.
