Rising Stars: Meet Saurabi and Binita Lamichhane

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saurabi and Binita Lamichhane.

Hi Saurabi and Binita, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
The idea of Nurvi as a mother-daughter jewelry brand came together in the midst of the pandemic. These past few years came with innumerous challenges and hardships, and for us it was a lesson in impermanence. This really gave us the push and the sense of urgency we needed to create an outlet for our passions and share our crafts. It has been a wonderful experience thus far sharing our ideas and working together and it has felt like a culmination of our lives and the bond that we share.

Binita: Making art has always been a part of my life and I view creating jewelry in the same lens. It is a joyous form of self-expression and I especially love crafting jewelry as gifts for my loved ones. It brings me joy to see someone make my work a part of their image. I especially love working on custom projects because of the collaborative nature of the work.

Saurabi: My mom has always been very creative and has a keen eye for aesthetics. I grew up watching her create so many wonderful pieces and she was always the first person to go to for frankly anything. I grew up wearing dresses she designed and made for me, along with jewelry and accessories. In a way, much of my designs today are inspired by her.

When we first came up with the idea for the brand, we knew we wanted to draw inspiration from our South Asian heritage and culture. We also wanted our products to be as sustainable as possible and so we are very conscious of where we source our materials… A lot of the ideas for Nurvi came from our experiences as consumers and what we wanted in a brand.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Without a business background, we found it difficult to work through some technical aspects of running a small business. As much as we wanted to just focus on the creative side, we needed to learn about the intricacies of owning a business. Thankfully, we have had the support of our family, friends, and community throughout this journey. Without them, we would not have been able to build this brand.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
With South Asian influences and Western styles, our jewelry is unique and represents our multifaceted identities. We also have something for everyone; whether you’re looking for more mature, classic pieces or more youthful, fun items, you can find it at Nurvi Jewelry.
