Today we’d like to introduce you to Abel Hernandez.
Hi Abel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I picked up my first pair of clippers at the age of 14. I got inspired to become a barber by my barber at the time, who in my eyes was living the life that I wanted to live. He had the nice house, the nice cars and most of all, he was his own boss. That to me at the age of 14 was very inspirational. I also took an interest in my appearance and my hair ever since I was young so to me being a barber was just the perfect fit for a career.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely not a smooth road at the beginning. At the beginning of my journey, I thought I was going to get my license and come out of barber school and just kill it. No one had told me that at the beginning of my career, I was going to struggle and be faced with so many challenges and obstacles. I had this picture in my head that I was going to become a barber and everything was going to fall on my lap. That definitely was not the case. When I first started out, there would be days where I would only cut one person a day and had no income coming in. I had to go out there and promote myself like no other. Whether it be going out to bars, clubs, shopping center everywhere I was at, I had to get my name out there and I always had my business cards in hand. I was tired of struggling, so I had to get my hustle on.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in making people look their best. I am a barber the thing I am most proud of is being able to boost my client’s confidence and self-esteem. I think what sets me apart from the rest is that I actually care about my clients and am really passionate and detailed about my craft.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
Coming up, I had a couple of mentors that helped me elevate my business. My family and my wife have always had my back and been supportive with everything that I set out to do.
