Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Munsterman.
Hi Michaela, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was raised as a true Texan; a messy-haired, barefoot adventurer. This lifestyle instilled an active spirit in me. I spent my collegiate years playing NCAA volleyball while pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Exercise Sports Science. After graduation, I continued my studies at Texas State University (Go Bobcats!) where I earned a Master’s degree of Science in Exercise Sport Science. I focused on the research of yoga and its mental health benefits. My research was published by the International Journal of Yoga (InJOY) and presented at a national yoga research conference. Those experiences are where my love of exercise and coaching people to use their own bodies as medicine started to bloom.
After my years of schooling were complete, I gained experience with private studios focusing on medical exercise, strength training, and yoga through the Medical Exercise Training Institute with Dr. Michael Jones. These experiences introduced me to a broader range of people with many different types of limitations; such as hip replacements, Parkinson’s, lower back pain, and fall prevention. I realized then that everyone has their best medicine already on them, their bodies.
I started Elite Medical Exercise four years ago and began serving those 50 years of age and above. I coach people to use their bodies (medicine) with exercise to improve their limitations and improve their quality of life. Elite Medical Exercise, or EMX, is also here to serve as the next step for clients continuing their healing process. This could be in conjunction with, or after working with, their health care providers (physical therapists, chiropractors, and/or general physicians). EMX is a place for people to continue to build their progress in a safe, encouraging environment. We are excited to keep growing by helping others continue progressing within their own health journeys and building strength so they may keep playing with their grandkids, travel and live life without limitations all in a safe environment.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My road has not been a smooth path but I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have audio dyslexia which means I don’t see things backwards but I hear things backwards. Learning how to read, write, and comprehend was always challenging for me in school. I still struggle today but without pressure, there are no diamonds. Meaning, I feel as though there is growth and beauty found in times of adversity. At a very young age, I learned to have grit, not excuses, and to pivot and find another way when I came across challenges. I have kept that very valuable lesson with me and that is what brought me to being a business owner. I contribute that skill to my business surviving and growing through Covid, a time when the world and so many other businesses shut down. It has given me the gift to problem-solve creatively, which I utilize in my training as well. It helps give EMX the ability to meet our client’s needs by providing them with an effective program versus providing them with a run-of-the-mill workout.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Elite Medical Exercise?
EMX uses medical exercise to serve as the next step for clients continuing their healing process. This could be in conjunction with, or after working with, their health care providers (physical therapists, chiropractors, and/or general physicians) to help bridge the gap between treatment and physical wellness. Medical Exercise training includes helping people who may have had joint replacements, lower back pain/problems, knee ailments, shoulder pain, or any other joint restrictions, diagnoses, and balance problems.
EMX focuses on improving quality of life through tailored medical exercise training sessions designed to improve joint health, mobility, and strength to live a life without limitations. If you have physical limitations or just want to improve your day-to-day strength, EMX is here to guide you to your goals in a safe way.
One of my favorite and frequent comments that we get at EMX is “you make these little changes but they make such a big impact.” That statement really embodies our training program at EMX. We teach clients how to get connected to their body and get the most out of fundamental exercises before progressing to the next step. This helps build strength and stability of the joint, increases the impact of the workout, and keeps them safe and mindful with their movement. We have numerous client success achievements such as, at age 70 spending a week hiking multiple miles in Arizona, competing in the 100-meter race in the Senior Olympics at age 80, and solely caregiving for five grandchildren for an entire weekend at 66 and feeling great afterwards. We aim to be known for giving people life without limitation by strengthening their bodies through medically-based training in a safe, encouraging environment.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
