Today we’d like to introduce you to Marc Burckhardt.
Hi Marc, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Germany but grew up in Waco, Texas. I studied art and art history here and then in Los Angeles before starting my career as a painter in New York. After five years there, I was established enough to move back to Texas—this time to Austin—working with clients and galleries around the world. I now divide my time between Austin and Northern Germany, where I have a home/studio as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I don’t think anyone becomes an artist for the smooth road! But I’ve been lucky and had some great experiences along the way. I can’t imagine anything else for my life—and I’m probably not good for anything else, either!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a painter, exhibiting internationally and doing commissioned pieces for clients like Gucci, Rolling Stone, and Porsche. Making a living as an artist my entire adult life is something I’m both proud of and grateful for—I realize what a rare thing it is to have that opportunity. I’ve combined my love of art history and symbolism with the simple joy of making things the traditional way, trying to unlock the secrets of Old Master techniques to address contemporary themes. That unique approach has served me well as a storyteller, which is how I see my work: I want to pull people in to my world, to engage them both visually and intellectually, so they become a part of that story.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My parents were both university professors, so we traveled to Germany in the summers to spend time with family. On those trips, I was introduced to the dark vision of the Flemish masters in the museums and cathedrals, and it left a profound impact on me. I recall as a child being fascinated by the images—I had no idea what the stories behind them were, so I filled in the blanks with my imagination. I guess I’m still doing that today.
