Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Hatchett.
Hi Jessica, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hatchett Project is an educational blog addressing project management topics and other appropriate concepts such as negotiations and goal setting. After successfully earning Project Management Institute’s Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certification, I formed an interest in starting a new blog. It was initially a personal blog about me, but I realized there was more need for an online publication with a professional aim towards project management. At Hatchett Project, we are “totally obsessed with project management,” our goal is to educate readers on pertinent aspects of project management.
As for my role as Project Management Maven + Content Strategist at Hatchett Project, I continue dwelling on the project management knowledge I have acquired from education and experience. My position at Hatchett Project allows me to learn more about the project management field as I delve into more details and complexities of the subject in each blog post. Writing and making videos about different aspects of project management helps me strengthen my knowledge, sharpen my skill sets, and support readers in the learning process. In essence, my readers are in the cycle of learning about project management with me. By visiting hatchettproject.com, my readers become better project management professionals, and those interested or new to the field can understand basic project management knowledge. I hope that readers fall in love and become “obsessed” with project management as much as I have.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Anyone forced to make a career pivot due to the covid-19 pandemic struggled to find a new path during an unexpected crisis. I had a full-time job and a different career plan and found myself in a situation where I had to adjust my goals. I saw it as an opportunity to learn and acquire a new skill, become proficient with project management knowledge, earn the CAPM® certification and take an alternative course in life. I do not think we can ever underestimate the influence that unexpected events have on our lives. Still, I believe our job as humans is to be flexible and diligent in our approach no matter what life throws at us.
There were times I doubted the validity of starting Hatchett Project instead of doing something else with my time. I had no experience as a blog writer, and I’m constantly learning to improve things. There was a struggle in finding the right resources, platform, and tools. It required me to invest some time into researching what would fit my overall goals and branding aspirations. Hatchett Project requires me to be self-reliant and self-disciplined to generate blog content continually. It can be challenging to find the motivation to get started on any project, especially when acting alone and without staff. Psychologically there are a lot of reasons to stop creating. To be successful with any endeavor, you must have the will and the vision for what you are trying to achieve and constantly bear in mind the importance of your goals. For motivation, I remind myself what Hatchett Project aims to achieve and why that’s significant.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a life-long learner focused on continuous improvement with a passion for project management. I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Advertising from the University of Texas at Austin and a Master of Business Administration degree (MBA) from Baylor University. In addition to earning the CAPM® certification I am also a Certified Scrum Master (CSM). I earned additional professional certifications in Human Resources, Human Resources Management, Negotiation, Marketing, Sales, and Training. Before starting Hatchett Project, I worked for nearly ten years in the residential real estate industry as an agent and consultant in Austin, Texas. While creating Hatchett Project, I collaborated with the Circuit of The Americas (COTA) to work as a Quality Assurance Manager. When I’m not obsessing over project management, you’ll probably find me reading. I am the Founder and Organizer for the Austin Book Nerds, a business and self-improvement book club. Feel free to join us at austinbooknerds.com.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Here’s my advice to Voyage Austin readers:
Do as many things as possible and get experience in various roles and jobs; it will make you a more well-rounded professional. Take classes that interest you. Be passionate about your endeavors. Do what you want to do with your life. Consider it all an educational experience, and don’t get too worried about the way life is “supposed to be” or what someone else has. Life is what we make it, no matter our circumstances. Never stop trying to become who you want to be. It’s never too late to realize a dream or a goal and charge after it.
