Today we’d like to introduce you to Slim Bishop.
Hi Slim, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I was able to hold a crayon, I created. Crude comics, cats in space and violent deaths. Thanks in part mostly to cartoons from the 90s. In my “adult” life, I screen printed for a while and began also painting. I honed my skills in painting tattoo flash and was able to apprentice to become a tattoo artist. My style is lowbrow art focusing on weird and obscure. Also, tying in my heritage as a native. Some of my art focuses on the mysticism of the tsalagi as well as breaking the stereotypes perpetuated by Hollywood and other media. With regards to false depiction of native Americans. I’m currently tattooing in Austin, Texas/Round Rock. My journey for growth is never-ending and I learn more each and every day.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has been a rough ride. I was never naturally talented at art or drawing. So I had to teach myself the fundamentals and draw my ass off.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a tattoo artist. A painter/sculptor/screen printer/ musician. My working job is full-time tattooer. I’m proud that I’ve stayed true to myself and my art style no matter what. My sincerity/honesty/friendliness set me apart from an industry filled with less than pleasant individuals. My art styling is unique and absurd…
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
Austin has a feel to it unlike any other city I’ve lived in. The music/food/culture are so widespread. It makes life fun and enjoyable. The divide between the wealthy and the working class in this city is what I like least. The cost of living keeps skyrocketing and the general lack of care for people in need.
