Today we’d like to introduce you to Gary Faust.
Hi Gary, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up in Dayton, Ohio and Northern Kentucky until I was 19 years old, I got into some trouble with the law so I left the state on an Amtrack train from Cincinnati and headed out to West Coast – California. I studied film. After bouncing around a bit more, I graduated from Santa Barbara City College with an associate in English. From that point, I drove to Austin, enrolled at UT and ended up studying journalism. Toward the end of college, I got an internship at a local radio show and through my experience there, I realized I wanted to start my own production company specializing in podcasts. A few comic friends of mine introduced me to some comedy bookers/producers and I began developing relationships with them. Fast forward ten months and I am part of a fully functioning production company and podcast studio.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No. From an early age, my life has been disjointed and unstructured, but I’m blessed to be able to do what I love for a living: podcasting. The juice is worth the squeeze.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in podcasts. I have one of the most community-driven studios in Austin. I think this is especially important as we experience the growing pains of Austin’s big city transition. Hopefully, I’m doing a good job of helping to preserve the aspects of the culture we know and love here in Austin while also embracing the new people coming in changing the mold. Tradition is good, but so is growth. My team and I also shoot promo videos, tv pilots, and a number of other entertainment-based projects. More often than not, I am working with comics and media personalities, but I occasionally delve into politics as well. I’m proud that I have been able to maintain working relationships with a lot of the people who were there with me from the beginning and believed in my idea from the get-go. I think maybe another person would have seen an opportunity to make more money with other clients or investors, but I stick with my people. And maybe that is also what sets me apart from others: my loyalty and dedication to the people I work with. I almost look at it like a public service… I get the beautiful and sacred opportunity to help make people’s wildest dreams a reality. In addition to that, I would say that my vision also sets me apart. I am able to visualize and plan out what I want to do years in advance, so I think that’s unique.
How do you define success?
I genuinely do not think I can answer this question… or maybe I’m just being lazy, but I’ll give it a shot.
Success is as simple as setting out to do something and grinding it out until that goal is accomplished. That’s my best answer for now. If I ever have the feeling of success, I’ll get back to y’all.
