Meet Isabel Vargas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isabel Vargas.

Hi Isabel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first began my journey in High School when one of my friends asked me to take an engineering elective with them. At first, I was hesitant but inevitably decided to take it.

This small decision impacted the rest of my life! From there, I went on to study Civil Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. At UT, I participated in a multitude of design competitions from creating prototypes that increase functionality of wheelchairs to building canoes out of concrete.. and yes they float! Eventually, after several years of involvement and juggling internships, I became the president of the largest civil engineering organization on campus, The American Society of Civil Engineers.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was in no means a smooth road getting to where I am now. I think there is still a lot of stigmatism around females in STEM-related fields. I can’t even count how many sexist remarks I encountered while in classes, applying to jobs, or even leading my organization.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am specializing in Land Development consulting and design. Basically, that means I design everything but the building. This includes pipelines, parking lots, retaining walls, channels, and so much more! I think one thing that sets me apart is the experience I have at such a young age. I am only 22 and have assisted in over ten projects around Austin.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
I’m a calculated risk taker. I think it’s super important to always move forward and grow whether that’s in work or just as a person. The best way to move forward is by taking risks and getting out of your comfort zone.
