Today we’d like to introduce you to Adam Siegel.
Hi Adam, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up in the suburbs of Chicago and from a young age always seemed to find myself making movies. After producing countless short comedy videos on various camcorders over the years, I moved to LA in 2007 to chase my filmmaking dreams. Starting out, I worked as a Production Assistant on commercials and independent features, before becoming an assistant at Paradigm talent agency, assisting agents who represented the best DPs, editors, Production Designers and Line Producers in the world; in the process, forging creative contacts I work with today.
My first breakthrough was at a show called What’s Trending, where I was the Head of Post Production and edited packages for YouTube’s first daily live streaming show. Wanting to spend more time on set, my next step was working as a Director/Producer for the website HitFix.com. Where I created pop-culture comedy videos for distribution platforms like college campuses, movie theaters, city buses, cabs, and airports. I then moved on to BuzzFeed’s Branded Division, where I edited dozens of Tasty videos, wrote and directed content for BuzzFeed’s YouTube and Facebook pages and learned the essential components and science behind viral social video. After, I took a job as a Sr. Producer at TBS and TNT where I created shorts and digital series with celebrities, athletes and comedians; producing millions of views on the network’s social platforms. Later, I transitioned into overseeing production and content for a major international gaming studio called Jam City that makes mobile games for giant IPs such as Harry Potter, Frozen, Jurassic Park and Family Guy.
Utilizing my experience in filmmaking, tech and digital media, I started Dark Box Productions in 2015 to help brands and creators of all sizes make compelling video content from soup to nuts. After a successful stint in Los Angeles, I moved to Austin, Texas with my wife and two young sons and reestablished the company with our headquarters on the North Side of town. We have never been happier and are super excited to continue bringing our unique brand of top-notch video production to the Lone Star State.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Working in digital video as well as tech, the industry is constantly evolving and brands are always shifting their marketing strategies. As a result, I’ve twice been on an entire division that was laid off in restructuring efforts. However, I bounced back stronger each time and made sure to recognize why these companies had failed to properly monetize their video efforts. No matter the outcome, I believe it is best to view each opportunity or new project as a chance to do better while learning and growing more comfortable at your craft.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We craft premium content and experiences for brands; specializing in comedy, technology and social video. Our skillset is like a fine-tuned Swiss Army Knife, with a customizable set of production tools including scripting, shooting, editing, animation and motion graphics. We have worked with the biggest studios and IPs in the world, providing a unique ability to create compelling impactful work specifically designed for cross-platform success.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
First and foremost would be my wife and producing partner, Samantha Siegel. In addition to helping out on numerous corporate and brand commissioned projects, we have written feature films and created a great deal of narrative-themed content together. Including winning Best Writer at the Austin Spotlight Film Festival for our film ESTRANGED. Having her to help create and bounce ideas off of has been invaluable to my success.
