Daily Inspiration: Meet Katey Yurko

Today we’d like to introduce you to Katey Yurko.

Hi Katey, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I have been a writer and researcher since I was a kid. Health and the human body has always interested me more than anything. I grew up giving so much power to people in white coats- never questioning them and always feeling like my fate was in their hands. After years of antidepressants, antibiotics, and Adderall. I ended up incredibly depressed and extremely ill. I was sleeping 16 hours a day and was no longer absorbing barely ANY nutrients. I did what I always do best- started researching. Taking health into my own hands. It’s a research project that has now lasted over eight years. I am obsessed. Eight years ago I started making my own concoctions to do things like increase my mental alertness, add more diversity to my gut microbiome and elevate stress. All scientific doses with an emphasis on less ingredients but a higher volume. To bring my story to my blog and my potions to the people of Austin is something I am so grateful for! I want to help others, get them talking about their health and encouraging them to keep asking questions!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road! My growth has been SLOW and even though I think that was a good thing, I was always told I was doing something wrong for not incorporating growth tactics- like follow/unfollow, loop giveaways, etc. To this day I have people tell me my growth would be 10X if only I had done that! And that it’s not too late! But seriously- I will never EVER do that. It doesn’t align with my values. I’ve also had a hard time convincing brands to work with me, someone who values research over gorgeous photos… you’d be surprised, but a lot of brands just want pretty photos and a puppet who will write whatever they say. Making money has been tough for me as a creator however, I’ve made enough to make a career so I am grateful for that. Also starting a potions business feels BIG, and I still feel lost in the legalities and financial aspect of it all. But my heart and soul is there!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
In normal consumer-speak, I like to break down studies into language and examples that we can actually use. My content is more science and expert opinion based and my focus is on skin, longevity, mood, gut, and liver health! That’s my big five. I am very conversational and am more into the written word and video than I am photos. I am known for making intentional potions, facial massage, biohacks, and being a nut about wearing sunscreen lol. We have fun and laugh and learn at the same time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I was lucky to start my first blog back in 2011 when half the people didn’t even know what a blog WAS! I’ve been able to grow and learn from the start. I do think people can be successful starting a blog today in 2021, but I do feel lucky to have gotten in early and see the industry evolve over time.
